Will Hofbauer & Sangre Voss team up for ‘Steppe EP’ this June on Control Freak Recordings, featuring a remix from Discwoman’s Ciel. London-based Will Hofbauer and Sangre Voss, whose individual work has seen them appear on labels such as Rhythm Section and Will’s own Third Place imprint, team up for the first time on Control Freak Recordings for the wonky ‘Steppe EP’, picking up early support from Ben UFO, Bradley Zero, and more. Leading the release, ‘Pumice’ tumbles through rolling low end, crunchy percussion and an eerie breakdown for a high energy start to the A-side. ‘Flundra (Flundra Mix)’ follows with bubbling pads and speaker-rattling subs around a kick-less drop, leading into a shimmering breakdown. On the flip, ‘June-O’ sees the duo craft a low tempo slugger, peppered with tablas, bells and eagle samples around warped, loopy synthesis. Ciel’s remix of ‘June-O’ takes the B2 spot, adding stuttering percussion, vocal chops, and additional wildlife samples to the mixture to round out the release.

The aptly named ‘Upcycling’ is back with a fresh set of remixes taking contributions from Manami, Suze, Surgeons Girl, Outsider and Yushh. Delay Grounds wanted to take a slightly different approach to the process by giving each producer a single sonic element from each of the original tracks - taken from his field recordings - and allowing each to craft entirely new songs with their respective elements, hence: ‘Upcycling Rebuilt’.

Frankfurt producer and co-founder of Precision Breakbeat Research imprint, Kabuki, brings us the final instalment of the collaboration-focused Beat Excursions series.

Invading his nostrils were the smells of spices, fish and bodies which, when experienced in tandem, made for a deadly concoction. This was especially true in his case where survival would depend on the sharpness of wit and perception. Swimming through swathes of people who clamoured clumsily on top of each other, he felt the air begin to prickle his face, signalling an opening which would either lead to safety, or more danger.

Following 5 editions, 24 tracks and 17 artist collaborations which range from Detroit-based Footwork connoisseur Sinistarr to Bronx native Anna Morgan, Kabuki's self-released Beat Excursions series has reached its final form. For its sixth and final manifestation, it's down to Exit Records boss dBridge, label affiliate Fixate, and Japanese dubstep and DnB stalwart ENA to offer their bass-heavy input.

Our pick sees Kabuki go solo. Inspired by a trip to Hong Kong where he visited the iconic location immortalised by Wong Kar-wai's 1994 movie, 'Chungking Mansions' is a playful half-timer. Opening the track are high-frequency synth plucks which glimmer on a liquid surface before melodic low-ends and a hard-hitting beat plunges things into mischief. This track is action-packed, with sharp edge sounds that glisten under neon lights.
