Returning to the Ransom Note Records offshoot, Insult To Injury boss Timothy Clerkin presents four prime cuts of rave meatiness for our ravenous consumption. Showing off his chops, Timothy’s distinctive Acid sound collides head on with Jungle and Breakbeat elements, put through the mincer to form an EP of epic dance floor destroyers. 

Dreaming explodes out of the gate first, clattering in with a big, wobbly bass line before dropping into a rapturous rave anthem! Perfect for the late summer festivals. Tour de Trance takes the tempo down a notch, whilst revving up the Hands-In-The-Air-O-Meter! Big, analogue synths build throughout, sweeping us up and taking us to a place of pure ecstasy by the end.

Jangala continues this blissfulness, transporting us to a synthesized rainforest, where birds call and string sections play in perfect harmony. This paradise is fleeting though, as the carpet is ripped out from under our feet and we’re slapped around the face by a rave stab so aggressive, it probably has rabies. 

Broken Wing takes us to the close with eastern inspired melodies and drums interacting with an Acid bass and resonant synth stabs to generate a hypnotic state of being. As we approach enlightenment, the sounds build around us to transport us to a higher rave plain.

Timothy Clerkin - Dreaming EP [Snippets] ITI#20

Greg Foat is one of the UK’s leading jazz pianists, composers and music producers who has worked with a diverse selection of musicians including Moses Boyd, Bob Lind, Curtis Lundy, Rita Ora, Questlove, Lady Blackbird and The Kooks. In recent years he’s recorded for Jazzman Records, Athens of The North and Strut. Something of a musical maverick, his solo and collaborative albums touch on everything from spiritual jazz, library music and soundtrack sounds, to Balearic beats, jazz-funk, and deep house.

On this release Greg Foat deviates into the world of Detroit deep techno, utilizing his arsenal of obscure 80’s synths. On hearing the original ‘Psychosynthesis’ from Greg’s album (released on Blue Crystal records), Ross thought it needed a remix to make it the epic techno cut that it so obviously is waiting to be! To do this, Ross brings in Beyonce collaborator Foremost Poets, plus the musical genius that is Crooked Man who gets to grips with it too. Psychosynthesis Part 1 & 2 just dropped on the 5th August. New Jersey DJ & producer Foremost Poets Remix lands 26th August, then legendary Sheffield producer Crooked Man further shines a light on the track, his Crooked Man Remixes following on in September. The hot air balloon drifted up into the sky, it could be seen overlooking the city, those perched in the tiny wicker basket below watched down upon a busy world of hustle and bustle.

The sky was clear but in the distance there was the odd cloud splattered against a deep radiant blue backdrop. The sun beamed down upon them as they continued to rise in the glow of the morning.

Perhaps this is what it felt like, flying that is. He’d always imagined it might be weightless and freeing, yet as he sat perched in the small booth he realised it was far more than that. It was a sense of being, a state of forever in which you might never land and touch back down to earth. That would be dreamy he thought..

Yuu Udagawa is set to release a new EP, a fruity assortment of fun electronic mischief which is reminiscent of early DJ Koze and old downtempo beat tapes. This one gets a big green tick and a thumbs up from us.

Everything had to be in its place, from the hairs on her forehead to the sheen of her shoes and the placement of the ornaments on her mantel piece. She wanted things to be just so. And so she expected the same from everybody around her, but they could never meet her high standards, she sometimes couldn't reach her own. From the outside you'd assume she had a handle on each and every element of her life, but deep down she was never happy, there was always something that could be improved. 

For his self-titled debut album under the moniker Dumbo Tracks, Cologne producer Jan Philipp Janzen (known elsewhere for his work as Von Spar, Die Sterne and Urlaub in Polen) explores the world of dub in its many forms. Linking up with a long list of collaborators, including the likes of DJ Koze, Portable, Die Nerven’s Julian Knoth and Peaking Lights’ Indra Dunis, the LP celebrates the idea of the studio and the possibilities of post-production, a core component in the creation of dub music, by honing in on each element and approaching each one them as a separate instrument.

On more than one occasion she'd been the object of someone's desires, whether she invited the attention or not. 'Object' seemed to be the apt word; lingering eyes, unwanted comments, wandering hands - for as long as she could remember it felt like her body and being belonged to somebody else. It wouldn't happen until later in life, but thankfully objectification gave way to empowerment, to celebrating every bit of herself and reclaiming her sexuality as hers and hers only.

Infinite Wellness is the follow up to Scandi-dance duo Ultraflex's debut LP Visions of Ultraflex. After picking up various accolades for their first album, they've continued to hone their sweet, dreamy sound which is a melting pots of synth-pop, R&B, disco and 70s Italian soundtracks with a distinct 80s feel to it. On Infinite Wellness these influences are at the fore; the hazy, sugary production characterised by the pair's vocals and accompanied by a series of experimental videos.

This place was unlike anything she'd ever seen before. Small white houses lined the winding streets, glimmering beneath the sun, and the city's inhabitants exuded joy, welcoming everyone with open arms. It was like something from a postcard or a fairy tale story. She'd envisaged somewhere like this in her mind, in many of her dreams too, but she never thought she could reach out and touch it. It had always been housed in her imagination; an invisible entity but now it was tangible - it truly existed.

As a founding member of Bourbonese Qualk, Simon Crab has long explored sounds from the fringes, whether that's in the electronic world or the spaces between new wave, industrial, electro, dub and post-rock, among others. After the disbanding of the group and a couple of long players under his own name, Crab took some time away from releasing music, until now.

Invisible Cities marks his third solo album and finds its home in the safe hands of Leeds imprint Space Ritual. Recorded last year at his studio in Hastings, with extra percussion and vocals from Fritz Catlin, David J Smith and Ksenia Sadovski, the compositions echo his formative influences and explorations from ambient, dub, experimental, soundtrack, new wave and more.

Hoshina Anniversary is from Hachioji, westside of Tokyo. His new LP of fluid, experimental dance music draws upon his influences of jazz fusion, electronica, and Japanese heritage. HakkyouShisou translates to “going crazy”, which captures the intensity and movement of a rhythmic / club atmosphere. Crisp, minimalist beats and melodies build at an urgent velocity, while a smoky piano plinks out chords.

The thirtieth anniversary release of the label is presented by the figure of the German electronic scene from Berlin - Mystigrix , with his three-track EP "Shades of Blue", as well as an electro remix from the bright representative of the Moscow electronic scene Marco Lazovic.

Starting with the hypnotic broken electro journey "Ultramarine" where the atmosphere of the tune immerses in the upcoming journey in the electro remix from the Moscow talent Marco Lazovic. Dark as metal, acidic as an element, "Cobalt" continues its journey through the silver-white nebula, and the blue-green "Cyan" with its golden barrel and pritransovanoy atmosephrovoy leads us to the end of the journey on the waves of the future. 
The entire release is written on the old-school legendary Roland MC303.Undoubtedly Cyril and Alexander demonstrate their audacious productive approach by combining retrospective elements into future productions.

PREMIERE : Mystigrix - Ultramarine

Genji Sawai’s classic LP “Sowaka”, featuring Midori Takada and Bill Laswell, reissued for the very first time.
Sowaka will be re-released on February 10th with remastered audio.

Sowaka, recorded in 1984, displayed an innovative sound that went beyond genre – mixing dub, world, jazz, electro, hip-hop and avant-garde. A perfect match of some of the most experimental artists of that time resulting in an extremely sought after and singular piece of music of the golden Japanese era. A talented crossover.

In 1984, working with Bill Laswell, Michael Beinhorn and Midori Takada would be unlike working with anyone else Genji Sawai had before, pulling him out of the J-jazz experimental scene he was based on. Rather than work off written music, they’d build songs like cooks. Genji might supply the ingredients, perhaps the tonal choices – sax, FM synths, drum machines, and Bill would task himself to do the “cooking”, creating the overall image of the song. It’s the use of imagery to have a conversation with each other, musically, that just felt so different to Genji.

Unlike the other musicians who contributed to Sowaka, musicians of impressive, rarefied technique like Midori Takada, Shuichi “Ponta” Murakami, and Kazuhiko Shibayama, notation or sheet music wasn’t a part of Genji’s vocabulary with Bill. With him, drawings were how songs were built from the ether. Whatever image a demo conjured up – that’s where the song had to go.

You hear it on songs like “Hikobae” that predicted the chopped and screwed sound that would revolutionize hip-hop years later. On this track what started with a mental picture, of some kind of tree shoot, metastasizes a vision full of no-wave sax skronk dosed with pointillistic dub affectations. Although, Sowaka wasn’t tied inherently to it’s original meaning – the final utterance from the Buddhist Heart Sūtra – it’s philosophical meaning wasn’t too divorced from the true meaning (or at least, his truest meaning) Genji placed on it here: getting things done. Simply put, all his high-minded ideas wouldn’t have come to fruition unless all involved put some serious work into getting the project over the finish line. In five cracking days the album was put on tape and was then jettisoned off to NYC for Bill to put its final touches.

What’s fascinating about Sowaka, or at least what will make it so, is just how it perfectly captures a certain atmosphere, somewhat alien to overground Japanese music at the time. Forget about a starry-eyed, futuristic, technopolis. The Japan heard in songs like “1969 (The Real)” is found in its iconic back alleys and constantly changing cityscape. It would use hip-hop, jazz, folk, and world music, to drop its sonic graffiti. That pull of “tradition” trying to co-exist with increasingly hypermodern ideas is palpably heard in music defined by its mix of organic and synthetic instruments paired with hard-nosed melodies. Genji’s Japan, as heard in Sowaka, pulls no punches, it wants you right in the middle of that public maelstrom. It wants you to sonically be there.

Behind the mysterious chopped-and-screwed-with jazz of songs like “Hikobae” or the no-wave, nu wave-fried jazz of the titular track, there was a new kind of fusion being presented. Moving beyond world music, there was territory to be uncovered that was even more unplaceable. Somewhere, between the mind, body, and spirit, closer to one’s neck and booty, was this music urging you to simply move elsewhere, further, until you’re closer to where Genji’s music would land. Somewhere between history and his story, there’s still room to rewrite our story by absorbing this spectacular music that remains completely, forever, out of time.
