Bombay's Milkman crew started throwing raves at defunct locations across India, with the hope of changing the way people experienced nightlife in the country. Over the past four years, they've brought over the likes of Helena Hauff, DJ Stingray, Ben UFO, Lena Willikens, Kamaal Williams, Optimo and Aisha Devi, to name but a few. This year party collective founder Jai added another string to their bow with the launch of their label and a first release from Bombay-based producer Azu Hoyvoy - a dark, grungy, avant-garde EP titled ‘Future Literature’.

Another member of the Milkman family, and a resident at their parties, is SPACEJAMS, who takes care of this week's humpday mix. Real name Yohann Jamsandekar, his wide-ranging selections and mercurial mixing style is translated through his raucous, high-energy sets that detonate the dance floor. 

Jai gives us a brief intro to the resident: “The artist I’m about to introduce is SPACEJAMS, our resident DJ who has practically opened for almost every artist that I have mentioned above. When I moved back to India in 2017, he was the first person I met in music and we instantly connected over it. Yohann was there from the start of Milkman in India and had a major role to play in the bookings we did over the years. To have him do this mix is very important because he really represents the Milkman sound in India and is probably my favorite DJ in the country.”

Futureboogie Recordings is calling time after ten years with a 20-track compilation that sums up the sound of the lovingly curated Bristol label. From throbbing arps and noirish guitar twangs to errant analogue blips and ceaseless, rolling grooves, it’s a different sound to what you might have heard five years back on the Summer Riot IV compilation, and certainly a long way from the early days. Consider Futureboogie 10² an ode to evolution as much as a toast to all the great tracks and the family of artists that have passed through the wide-reaching Futureboogie sphere since before the label was even a sparkle in the disco ball.
 
Originally founded by Dave Harvey and Steve Nickolls, the roots of Futureboogie lie in an intimate Bristol party called Seen. Started in 2002, this open-hearted session invited the likes of Metro Area, Attica Blues, Carl Craig, Maurice Fulton, Moodymann and Gilles Peterson – based on that heavyweight list, you can see the foundations were laid for what was to come. Futureboogie evolved off the back of these parties as a many-limbed operation – an artist management and booking agency as much as a club night, with Harvey and Nickolls consolidating the sound as DJs around Bristol and beyond. The progression to a record label was a logical one.
 
When Futureboogie Recordings launched in 2011 with Julio Bashmore and Javeon McCarthy’s ‘Father Father’, it represented an extended circle of friends close to the label from Bristol’s deep pool of talent and beyond – amongst them Eats Everything, Waifs & Strays, PBR Streetgang, Behling & Simpson and Crazy P. The reach of the label grew in tandem with its reputation, not to mention the endeavours of the team in other areas of the music game. The Boogiefuturo label became a vital entity on its own terms, carrying a lauded DJ Nature remix of Typesun which encapsulates two distinct generations of Bristolian house music at its best. DJ Nature, who cut his teeth as DJ Milo in the Wild Bunch days, has gone on to become a regular feature on Futureboogie, helping define its soulful, adventurous spirit.

On the second EP for his Dynamics Of Acid label, acid aficionado MOY — fresh from releases on Nocta Numerica and Batrachian —  teams up with the mysterious Zodiac Childs for a feast of shredded breaks, electro melodies and moody atmospheres.

On the A-side, MOY’s ‘Ratufa’ mixes euphoric pianos, hardcore drums and glowering bass with a side order of 303, while Zodiac Childs ups the intensity with a remix that adds ascending arpeggios and gigantic rave stabs to light up the dance.

On the B-side, Zodiac Childs offers up the smouldering break chops and cavernous bass bleeps of ‘Overstep’, before flipping into acid madness halfway through. Finally, MOY’s version threads serpentine sulphuric tones through an intricate melodic arrangement and a dusty hip-hop drum loop. 

It all adds up to a jaw-dropping release from two of the hottest names in the electronic underground.

Lexia Majora is a Hold It Down resident and former manager of @room_303 and @sistersoundsexeter. While she still plays in venues in Exeter, she’s currently focusing a lot of her energy on finishing her PhD. Her thesis looks at social and community aspects revolving around the rominimal genre and hopes to publish this into a book afterward! Lexia Majora also really enjoys sharing her music on the radio and online, as she’s done mixes for platforms like  @derliebebristol, @mixnights and @intaresu, as well as on the university of Exeter’s student radio @xpressionfm, in collaboration with Beats and Bass Society.
