On Monday August 1st, 2022, I had the pleasure of playing a spontanious downtempo/ambient set in NY at .LIFE in the Yard at H0L0. 

I happened to be in NY for a techno show at TBA when I was asked to play this magical patio for an upcoming day party. I love downtempo so much that I actually had enough music on me to play from open to close for 6+ hours. 

In an effort to have people listen to the entire thing, I split the mix into 3 different parts. Once each part has plenty of listens, I'll release the set as a whole.

FUNK FOUNDATION #30 is a tribute to Van McCoy. I know that some of you would think that I must have gone mad to do a disco show…but no worries…Although Van McCoy is best known for his ‘75 mega hit "The Hustle" …prior to becoming disco mega star…. Van McCoy was RnB and Soul artist, musician, producer, arranger, conductor and label owner….with over 700 songs credited to him….going from the 50s all the way to his early-unexpected death in 1979.   

Van McCoy was born in 1940 in Washington, D.C. Today show is celebration of his life and work…. I will play songs from his releases and his collaborations with artists such as Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Stylistics, Aretha Franklin, Brenda & the Tabulations, The Presidents, David Ruffin, Peaches & Herb, Choice 4, Faith Hope and Charity, Melba Moore, and many more... I will focus on his soulful and groovy side…from soul to funk, RnB and disco-funk…so stay tuned and enjoy the show.

SYNTHOPIAN DREAMS (made in poland)

I was inspired to record this mix the day after seeing Job Jobse in Sydney. His Melt Festival ‘Sleepless Floor’ mix from 2015 (Set time: 7am) is one I keep going back to and it is the main reason I wanted to get better at DJing. Unfortunately I wasn’t there to witness that set in person (I attended Melt the following year), but I am very familiar with that stage and the energy it brings. 

As the name suggests, the music literally doesn’t stop for the entire duration of the festival. When I listen to this mix, I can feel the special moments as though I was there. This is why I wanted to take DJing more seriously so I could attempt to create these myself (well, that is the dream).

It's always nice to be greeted with an enigmatic selection of music fron an unsuspecting source. Kristian Birch-Hurst is a disc jockey and producer emerging from Birmingham. From a musical perspective he digs deep, blending an elegant array of style, genre and sound in a well rounded presentation which will leave toes tapping and ears intrigued. As a contributing writer here at Ransom Note he has expressed a wealth of fierce knowledge as well as an awareness sometimes lacking from a musician working in such an environment. As the co founder of Voyage Events he has helped push and promote a spectacular array of talent through his parties with the likes of Mehmet Aslan, Haai and more all gracing the booth. 

This mix is a subtle blend of disco, funk, soul, house, techno and abstract electronics and should demonstrate just why we are excited by him as a disc jockey. Lock in.
