We knew right away that we wanted to play around with this mix. It's very haunting and soulful all at once. The baseline carries it through these realms rather smoothly. Leonard's spoken word over his crooning back up vocalists harkens back to Lou Reed's "Walk on The Wild Side."

The first song, "Foolish Boy," uses an extended poker metaphor to tell the story of a man trapped in a cycle of obsession with a woman—the "dealer"—who will never give him what he truly wants. On the surface, it appears to be about a gambler losing at cards, but the lyrics gradually reveal that the real prize he's chasing is sexual: the "queen of hearts" and the unclimbable "cherry tree." The song traps the listener just as the narrator is trapped, inviting sympathy for him while the dealer laughs, stripped of her voice. Only through details like the club foot—bent upward, pointing at him like a teacher's accusing finger—does the song reveal its true judgment: he is not a victim but a fool who refuses to hear "no," and the listener who pities him becomes a fool as well.

As the song unfolds, the narrator begins to see his own foolishness but cannot break the pattern. He knows the dealer is holding back, knows the game is uneven, yet he keeps betting, hoping for the perfect hand — the queen of hearts, the winning run, the moment where everything finally turns in his favour. The cold wind, the long walk home, and the repeated Friday nights show the cost of this obsession: time, money, dignity, and self-respect are all lost, yet the pull of the game remains stronger than reason. The voice calling him “foolish boy” becomes the inner conscience, mocking and warning him, but never strong enough to stop him.

In the end, the song reveals a universal pattern of human behaviour: the tendency to chase what we know will defeat us, driven by hope, ego, and desire. The dealer never cheats openly, yet she always wins, because the real weakness lies in the player himself. Each loss leads to another attempt, another promise to do better next time, another night at the table. The game therefore becomes a symbol of life’s repeating traps — the things we return to even after they strip us of certainty and identity — showing how the greatest defeat is not losing the hand, but never learning when to fold.
