ARINS: Analysing and Researching Ireland North and South

Shelfmarks is a podcast by our podcaster-in-residence Zoë Comyns. Zoë has spent time looking through the collections and library holdings in the Academy to explore how people have written about and observed our natural world over the centuries.

Each week Zoë will sift through the Academy collection for Shelfmarks (biographies, manuscripts, books and reference from the collection) and invite a weekly guest writer to discuss their own relationship with the natural world. Writers include Amanda Bell, Kerri Ní Dhochartaigh, Manchán Magan, Siobhán Mannion, Jane Clarke and Neil Hegarty.  Each writer has been specially commissioned to write pieces exploring their own relationship with nature.

From the walks and works of R.L. Praeger to the dragonflies collected by Cynthia Longfield or birds by ornithologist RM Barrington, each week will give listeners a sense of the people who have passed through the academy and how their work and the natural world still inspires writers today.

In this new series of four podcasts host Gill Plunkett explores the long view of climate change by interviewing the authors of 'Climate and Society in Ireland'. We talk about hunter gatherers, disease, poetry, weather events and consider our future vulnerabilities.

'Climate and Society in Ireland' is a collection of essays, commissioned by the Royal Irish Academy, that provides a multi-period, interdisciplinary perspective on one of the most important challenges currently facing humanity. Combining syntheses of existing knowledge with new insights and approaches, contributors explore the varied environmental, climatic and social changes that occurred in Ireland from early prehistory to the early 21st century. The essays in the volume engage with a diversity of pertinent themes, including the impact of climate change on the earliest human settlement of Ireland; weather-related food scarcities during medieval times that led to violence and plague outbreaks; changing representations of weather in poetry written in Ireland between 1600 and 1820; and how Ireland is now on the threshold of taking the radical steps necessary to shed its ‘climate laggard’ status and embark on the road to a post-carbon society.

Dr Gill Plunkett is Reader in the School of Natural and Built Environment at Queen's University Belfast. Gill is an archaeologist and palaeoecologist with a specific interest in understanding human-environment interactions in the past. As an archaeologist, Gill has worked on Irish prehistoric and Medieval sites, and has several years experience of wetland archaeology survey and recording. Her palaeoecological expertise includes palynology and plant macrofossil analysis (peatland and archaeobotanical), as well as the application of tephrochronology as both a dating and correlation method and a means of examining volcanic impacts on climate and society. While much of her research is based on Irish bogs, her tephra work extends to polar ice cores, the Caspian Sea and lakes and bogs in North America, Kamchatka and southeast Asia.

Climate and Society in Ireland

Grangegorman Histories is a public history project of Dublin City Council, Grangegorman Development Agency, HSE, Local Communities, National Archives, Royal Irish Academy and TU Dublin. Over the past 250 years, Grangegorman, on the northside of Dublin city centre, has been the site of a workhouse, a large psychiatric hospital and a prison and now integrating back into the city as a health and education campus for the HSE, TU Dublin and the local community. Grangegorman Histories works to uncover, catalogue and commemorate the history of this site and its surrounding area. The historical buildings of Grangegorman stand as architectural monuments to its past and complex history. This podcast series will explore histories of confinement, the treatment of people with mental illnesses and other histories of interest of this site. Each episode is led by a different expert focused on an identified building or history of the site. Episodes will be added to the series over the years 2021-2025.

A two-day conference exploring the historical, ecclesiastical, literary and illustrative aspects of An Leabhar Breac which ran from Thursday 27 April - Friday 28 April 2023 in the Royal Irish Academy.

The Royal Irish Academy manuscript An Leabhar Breac/The Speckled Book was written in Irish by Murchadh Riabhach Ó Cuindlis (a scribe of the Book of Lecan), at Cluain Lethan in Múscraige Tíre, in north Co. Tipperary and at other locations, between the years 1408 and 1411. In the 16th century the manuscript was held by the Mac Egans of Duniry, the most prominent of the hereditary legal families of late medieval Ireland, whence it also received the title of Leabhar Mór Dúna Doighre/The Book of the MacEgans. It is the largest Irish vellum manuscript created by one scribe and contains religious and biblical material derived from Latin, Irish literature and history, including the lives of St Patrick and St Brigid, the Litany of Our Lady, Félire Óengusso Céli Dé, the humorous saga Aisling Meic Conglinne, and some reworkings of biblical history. This two-day conference will explore the historical, ecclesiastical, literary and illustrative aspects of An Leabhar Breac, this most impressive example of a predominantly religious manuscript compilation in the Irish vernacular.

ARINS: The Franchise in Irish Unification Referendums

In this first episode of Shelfmarks Zoë Comyns looks at an expedition to Rockall off the north-east coast of Donegal funded by the Royal Irish Academy in 1896.   

The island is extremely remote and poor weather conditions meant it was impossible to land on Rockall. The crew of geologists, naturalists and biologists did collect dredge samples and bird specimens. This programme evokes his journey and the sense of discovery. 

One of those on board was RIA member R.M. Barrington, whose interest in birds led to him to publish The Migration of Birds as Observed at Irish Lighthouses and Lightships (1900). Barrington asked lighthouse keepers all around the country to record information on all birds that died by striking the light stations. He asked that they:  “cut off and label the wing and leg of every common bird which is killed at their station…All species can then be identified with certainty.’ He also requested that ‘Rare birds should be sent entire”. 

He gathered more than 2000 specimens, legs and wings and whole birds arrive by post every week, from all over Ireland to his home in Wicklow allowing him to identify patterns and compile his book. 

Zoe’s guest on Shelfmarks is Kerri ní Dochartaigh, author of Thin Places. Kerri brings Zoë to Baltray beach in Co. Louth where they discuss Kerri’s relationship with the natural world and she reads new pieces specially commissioned for the Shelfmarks. 

Kerri chats about how being prompted by the notion of discovery and expedition she observes her baby son taking in the world for the first time. 

She also writes about a dream that she often returns to in which she is observing a bird in a forest and has to choose between experiencing this moment and rushing home to document it. 

Kerri has been writing for a number of years and she explores in her final piece one of her very first pieces of writing about a bird strike. Barrington’s studies resonant with her as she has come across numerous dead birds during her walks. 

Kerri ní Dochartaigh is the author of Thin Places which was highly commended by the Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing 2021. She has written for the Guardian, the Irish Times, the BBC, Winter Papers, and others. She lives in an old railway cottage in the heart of Ireland with her family.

Shelfmarks: Ep 1 | Kerri ní Dochartaigh

In this week's episode, podcaster-in-residence Zoë Comyns delves into the life of Cynthia Longfield and spends time with writer Amanda Bell in her Mayo garden. 

Cynthia Longfield (1896–1991) was an entomologist, specialising in dragonflies (Odonata). She was part of the St George Expedition that sailed to the Pacific in 1924.  Her collection of memorabilia from the 1924 St George expedition is held by the Academy Library, and includes personal diaries, news-cuttings, albums of photographs and her killing jar used for collecting insect samples. She subsequently went on a variety of other research expeditions in Asia, Africa, Canada and South America. Cynthia Longfield worked in the British Museum as an unpaid associate for over 30 years. She was the Museum’s Odonata expert. She retired to her family’s Cloyne in 1956. In 1979 she donated her library (books, notes and ephemera) to the Royal Irish Academy. The collection is known as the ‘Longfield-Roberts’ collection.

In this episode Zoë invites poet and writer Amanda Bell to explore some themes around Cynthia Longfield’s life and research – Amanda has written for the podcast about collecting, iridescence and poison – Zoë visits her in her Mayo garden to chat about tending the site and her understanding of nature and how it influences her writing life.

Amanda Bell’s most recent collection is Riptide (Doire Press). Riptide explores the zeitgeist using the art of Edvard Munch as a counterpoint, delving into the ecological and spiritual anguish informing his paintings, finding parallels in the world we live in today.

Shelfmarks: bonus episode | Niall Williams and Christine Breen

This week on Shelfmarks Zoë Comyns tries to get a sense of the immense work done by Robert Lloyd Praeger. From his early days in Co. Down, tramping through the Mourne Mountains to the thousands of miles he walked across Ireland studying botanics, to his contribution to 800 publications and his 24 books RL Praeger is probably considered Ireland’s most influential naturalist. 

Zoë’s guest this week on Shelfmarks is poet Jane Clarke. Jane grew up in Co Roscommon and came to writing after a career in psychotherapy. She moved to Wicklow almost 25 years ago and Zoë visited her there in her home and took a walk up a lane known as Fairy Lane or Lousy Land and listeners will hear two specially commissioned poems about her neighbour and quarrymen.

An introduction to the podcast series

In this new series of four podcasts host Gill Plunkett explores the long view of climate change by interviewing the authors of 'Climate and Society in Ireland'. We talk about hunter gatherers, disease, poetry, weather events and consider our future vulnerabilities.

In episode 1, John Sweeney considers the challenging interaction between climate and society from the nineteenth century to the present, arguing that while throughout most of its history, Irish society was a prisoner of climate as mediated through the necessity of a harvest surplus, the relationship is now reversed: in a global context, climate is now the prisoner of people.

John Sweeney is Emeritus Professor in  the Geography Department at Maynooth University.

Graeme Warren is a Professor in the School of Archaeology, University College Dublin.

'Climate and Society in Ireland' is a collection of essays, commissioned by the Royal Irish Academy, that provides a multi-period, interdisciplinary perspective on one of the most important challenges currently facing humanity. Climate and Society in Ireland: Ep 4 | Graeme Warren

In this special episode of Shelfmarks for St  Brigid’s Day, in association with the Department of Foreign Affairs, podcaster-in Residence Zoë Comyns explores the figure of Brigid. She imagines her origins in Irish folktale and story and delves into the Royal Irish Academy collection for traces of Brigid in the recordings of the Doegen archive. 

In 1926 the Irish government asked Dr Wilheim Doegen (Director of the Sound Department at the Prussian State Library in Berlin) to make recordings of Irish speech in the Gaeltacht. The Department of Education asked the RIA to organise the project. Dr Doegen came to Ireland with his assistant, Karl Tempel in 1928. Speakers were asked to sing a song, tell a story, recite a version of the Parable of the Prodigal Son (based on a copy supplied to them in advance), count numbers or recite a prayer. The recordings were made on wax matrices which were then transported to Berlin where they were converted to shellac.

Elaine Feeney joins Zoë for a walk in Renville Park in Galway to chat about Elaine’s early life on a farm, superstition, women’s safety in nature and what Brigid means to her. Elaine has written two specially commissioned pieces for the episode of Shelfmarks. 
Elaine is a poet and writer whose most recent book is As You Were.  In the past year she has won the Kate O’Brien and the Dalkey 'emerging writer' awards. Elaine’s writing examines how history and national identity structure the everyday lives of Irish women.  For this episode of Shelfmarks Elaine has written an essay and a short story prompted by the figure of Brigit, the coming of Spring and the lives of women. She also takes inspiration from the Tom Murphy Mommo trilogy - the plays, Bailegangaire and A Thief of a Christmas and of course Brigit. 

Her essay A Fine Roll of Cloud from the west brings us back to her early years growing up on a farm in Athenry. She describes the work she and her siblings did to keep the farm going and the brutality of working with animals. In spite of this, Elaine founds moments of beauty and escape that lay the foundations for her writing life. 
In The Stranger, Elaine writes an origin story for the inspiration for Seamus’ statue of Brigit in Tom Murphy’s play Brigit. Seamus carves a statue of Brigit from bog oak and in Elaine’s account, he takes inspiration from a woman in a cafe.

Shelfmarks: St Brigid's Day Special

‘Instituting Grangegorman’ is the second in the Grangegorman Histories podcast series exploring the histories of the Grangegorman area of north, inner-city Dublin. Over the past 250 years, Grangegorman has been the site of a workhouse, a prison and a large psychiatric hospital and now this site is being redeveloped as a health and education campus for the HSE, TU Dublin and the local community. This podcast explores the history of the Richmond Lunatic Asylum, now the recently restored TU Dublin Lower House. 
Join architectural historian, Patrick Quinlan, as he explores the chequered career of this landmark building: a story of optimistic conception and utilitarian service, of neglect, decline and demise, culminating in the latest chapter of rebirth as a valued architectural and historical landmark. 
The architect of the original asylum building was Francis Johnston, most noted as the architect of the General Post Office on O’Connell Street, Dublin and the Chapel Royal in Dublin Castle. He designed and constructed the building, which opened in 1814, in a spirit of optimism as a national solution to the shameful conditions in which people with mental illnesses were confined in prisons, bridewells and houses of industry all over Ireland.
The original design and construction included architectural innovations and features that were informed by moral treatment: a progressive and humane approach to the care of people with mental illness popular during the early 19th century. However, by the later 20th century, the building became synonymous with the worst aspects of institutionalisation. Its closure in 1989 was heralded as  ‘symbolic of a revolution in healthcare’; its ‘dungeon-like architecture’ fit only for demolition. Three quarters of the building was levelled but Johnston’s entrance front survived. It endured two further decades of decay and dereliction before it was identified as a building of architectural, social and historical importance and worthy of protection. It has become part of the regeneration of the Grangegorman site, transforming this former hospital complex. The building reopened in 2021, ready to write its next chapter as a key centre for student services on the new TU Dublin Grangegorman campus.

Patrick is a past recipient of the RIBA Dissertation Commendation and is currently undertaking a PhD at Birkbeck, University of London.

Part of a series of lectures ‘Aon amharc ar Éirinn’: Irish families and their manuscripts

Behind every manuscript in the Academy collection lie the very real people from the past, the scribes, compilers and patrons of those manuscripts with all their varied interests, ambitions, and their particular view of the world and their place in it. The manuscripts in our collection are the principal tools for understanding the world of those scribes, scholars, patrons, keepers and readers of manuscripts, the leading families of medieval Ireland.

The learned class formed part of the court of the native elite and they were accorded prominence in Irish society and were rewarded with hereditary tenure of land and other
forms of wealth in return for their services. They maintained important schools of learning,
where students were trained and manuscripts were copied. Many of them retained their privileged status down to the end of the sixteenth century.

From July 2013 to February 2014, the Academy Library curated an exhibition which explored the themes of Seanchas ─ ‘the memory and narrative of Irish history as preserved and written from the early medieval period to the writing of histories of Ireland in the seventeenth century’; Filíocht ─ poetry; Reacht ─ law; Leaghas ─ medicine; and Creideamh ─ religion, as well as the stories of those who made these great books of Ireland.

The Market was a significant element of the area in the hinterland of Grangegorman from 1863 when it opened first to 1973 when it was closed down. This talk by Dr Mary Muldowney and Dr Declan O'Brien includes extracts from oral history interviews, with a range of people who shared their memories of working in the Market as well as information about the local and national importance of this very rural enterprise in its busy urban setting. Representing different facets of the life of the Market, the contributors came from various parts of the city and country and shed a fascinating light on what was once such an important workplace.

This talk was delivered on 3 June as part of Revealing Grangegorman, a celebratory event organised by GDA, along with TU Dublin, HSE and Workday.

A Brief History of the Dublin Metropolitan Cattle Market

This lecture was recorded on 17 May 2023 and due to popular demand was held again during Heritage Week on 15 August 2023.
Shortly after independence in 1922, the new Irish government turned its attention to the design of stamps to replace the contemporary British stamps then is use. Over the years since then Irish identity, culture and aspirations have been expressed through the medium of these miniature masterpieces with postage stamps acting as our ambassadors throughout the world. Long before the advent of the postage stamp, however, the idea of a stamp as a form of tax was well-known and the Academy’s library holds a remarkable album of eighteenth century revenue stamps which can, in a sense, be seen as the world’s very first stamp album. Highlighting such connections between the Academy and Irish stamps, Stephen Ferguson traces the changing nature of Ireland’s image from the conservative and inward-looking era of the early Free State to the more confident, socially progressive, and tech-savvy nation of today.

Curious collections of scarce and valuable books': eighteenth-century Irish private libraries.

On Wednesday 21 August 2024, ecologist and author, Richard Nairn, delivered a lunchtime lecture in the Royal Irish Academy as part of National Heritage Week 2024 entitled 'Richard J. Ussher: Chronicling the Birds of Ireland'. 

Richard John Ussher MRIA, 1841-1913, was a speleologist, ornithologist and the main author of Ussher & Warren, The Birds of Ireland (1900), a seminal publication in the history of Irish ornithology that provides an early benchmark by which we can measure the decline of native bird species.

The lecture focuses on the life and work of Ussher, descending the depths of Ireland’s caves in search of fossils and surmounting cliff-faces, mountains and rivers in pursuit of rare birds. The Ussher Bird Notes collection (RIA A009), housed in the Library of the Royal Irish Academy, consists of Ussher’s notes and correspondence relating to his research.

Recently, the RIA Library announced a new project, The Birds of Ireland, generously supported by The Heritage Council. The project aims to enable the long-term preservation, access, and discovery of this collection.

ARINS: Beyond Nationalism and Unionism

On Monday, 7 October, Nicholas Canny MRIA delivered this lecture as part of the Dublin Festival of History in the Royal Irish Academy.

Spenser’s View has, for centuries, been treated variously as a trove of prejudiced antiquarian lore useful for disparaging Irish people at moments of crisis, and as a store house of evidence that the English government engaged upon an Irish genocide in Elizabethan times. 

This lecture by Nicolas Canny, MRIA, offers a radical re-appraisal of the manuscript copy that Spenser left to posterity in 1596, and asks what motivated Spenser to take time from poetic composition to write this prose dialogue, what circumstances influenced his composition of different passages, and what sources and methods he used to underpin the ideas advanced by his interlocutors?

ARINS: Southern Irish Protestants

The Asylum Workshop: a performers perspective is the fourth in the Grangegorman Histories podcast series exploring the histories of the Grangegorman area of north, inner-city Dublin.

Evie O’Brien is an actor and performer. As a drama student at the Grangegorman campus of TU Dublin. Evie played a central role in the Asylum Workshop play, a documentary-drama written by playwright Colin Murphy, directed by Peter McDermott and performed by final year TU Dublin students in June 2023, supported by Grangegorman Histories.
In this short podcast, Evie shares her experience of how engaging with the play shaped her understanding of the history of the Grangegorman site as a one of the first TU Dublin students to move on to the site. She reflects on how mental health has been viewed in Ireland in the past, and how the physical buildings on Grangegorman serves as a reminder of the importance of dismantling the stigma that surrounds mental health in the future.

In the second episode of ‘My Identity’ Professor Colin Graham (Maynooth) is in conversation with NI Justice Minister and Leader of the Alliance Party, Naomi Long MLA. This episode is a recording of a public conversation which took place in Dublin on 6 December 2024.

A lifelong resident of East Belfast, and politically active since her early twenties, Naomi first joined Belfast City Council as an Alliance Party councillor in 2001. She was subsequently elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly as MLA for East Belfast in 2003. After having the honour of serving as Lord Mayor of Belfast from 2009 to 2010, she became the first Alliance MP elected to Westminster, as Member of Parliament for East Belfast in 2010, unseating the then First Minister, Peter Robinson. In May 2016, Naomi returned to the Northern Ireland Assembly as MLA for East Belfast, before becoming Leader of Alliance that October. Since then, she has presided over the most successful elections in Alliance’s history. Naomi is the current Justice Minister in the Northern Ireland Executive.

This is the third episode of the Flighty Creatures trilogy of short stories for podcast by Wexford-based writer, Sylvia Cullen. Inspired by women who dwelt in the Grangegorman Asylum, Penitentiary and Workhouse, these stories are set in the 18th and 19th centuries. ARINS: The SDLP, Politics and Peace

Lunchtime Lecture by Dr Jacinta Prunty. 
Lunchtime Lecture series organised by the Royal Irish Academy Library and the Irish Historic Towns Atlas 'Mapping city, town and country since 1824: the Ordnance Survey in Ireland.'
This was the Academy's Heritage Week lecture 2014, introduced by Prof. Mary E. Daly, Academy President.

The speaker contextualises the surveying of Ireland on the 6" scale: the survey was attempting to define boundaries for taxation purposes and to portray the country on an unprecedented scale, using scientific methods, rigorous standards and a highly systematised approach.  The maps were to provide a full record of the living landscape. The maps would be authoritative and have legal standing. Colby drew up a Code of Instructions for the military and civilian surveyors; these were amended over time to cater for unforeseen issues.  Larcom was responsible for the recruitment of linguists and antiquarian scholars for the Memoir and Placenames work. There was a clear chain of command and strong discipline.  Training was to a high standard. The latest instruments were purchased and problems with triangulation, particularly of the Great Central Plain, were resolved.  New instruments were developed. Contour lines were used. Placenames were recorded even if they were not to be used.  Every piece of information was allocated a source.  Issues arose of what should be included or omitted on the map, e.g. gravestones (omitted). How would the railways be superimposed on the maps? How should water-land boundaries be shown? (the Crown had foreshore rights, thus this was a key decision). How do you define a footpath? Revisions proved difficult, budgeting was very tight, there was pressure from various groups, e.g. industrialists, the railways, the Memoir group.  Printing brought its own set of problems, and sales were necessary to enable the project to continue.  These and many other issues facing the Survey are discussed in the course of this lecture.

ARINS My Identity: Episode 5 with Claire Mitchell

As part of Biodiversity Week 2025, Dr Carla Mateus delivered a lunchtime lecture in the Royal Irish Academy on the topic of historical meteorological records held in the Academy Library's archive collections. 

Historical meteorological observations are crucial to better assess past climate variability and trends and the frequency, intensity, duration, and distribution of extreme weather events, and to put the current climate change into historical context. The records preserved in the archives of the Royal Irish Academy date from the late eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century and are of cultural and scientific importance. Many of the records were sent to the Academy by diligent observers interested in science and the arts, others were collated in response to an Academy initiative to organise a system of meteorological observations in Ireland in the period 1850-52.

This lecture highlights the role of the Royal Irish Academy as a curator of historical meteorological records across the Island of Ireland, as a publisher of diverse papers on instrumentation and meteorological observations, and as a learned body which encouraged a standardised approach for reliable weather recording.

The meteorological records include observations of air temperature, maximum and minimum air temperatures, wet bulb, sea temperature, rainfall, pressure, wind direction and force, cloud cover and weather remarks. Many well-known historical extreme weather events are covered by instrumental observations and documentary weather remarks, such as storms and air temperature extremes.

ARINS podcast 45: European Perceptions of Scottish Independence Before and After Brexit

In this month’s ARINS podcast, host Rory Montgomery discusses the recent Irish Studies in International Affairs article, A Review of Employment Law in Ireland, North and South, with its authors Esther McGuinness (Ulster University), Desmond Ryan (Trinity College Dublin) and Rory O'Connell(Ulster University).  

The article explores the evolution and current state of employment law across the two jurisdictions on the island of Ireland, a century after the 1920 Government of Ireland Act. It  examines how partition and constitutional changes have affected shared legal origins and  analyses collective and individual labour law, including health and safety, through the lens of historical and contemporary influences, such as Brexit and the Windsor Framework.

ARINS Podcast 46: A Review of Employment Law in Ireland, North and South

Listen back to our 2025 Heritage Week lecture by Emma Murphy, curator at the National Museum of Ireland – Natural History. Learn about R. J. Ussher MRIA, 1841-1913, and his connections to the National Museum, including a large collection of archived correspondence from Ussher to the curators and the hundreds of specimen donations that Ussher gave personally, or were given by his associates due to his encouragement.

Richard John Ussher MRIA, 1841-1913, was a speleologist, ornithologist, and renowned Irish naturalist. He published lists of Irish birds, showing the species contained in the National Collection. These, alongside “The Birds of Ireland” (1900), co-authored with Warren, were important works in the history of Irish ornithology. He donated his archive collection to the Royal Irish Academy, and many specimens to the National Museum of Ireland - Natural History.

Emma Murphy, Curator of Terrestrial Zoology at NMI – Natural History gave this lecture, exploring some of the stories, both funny and tragic, that can be found within Ussher’s collections, and highlighting his enduring scientific legacy.

This lecture was part of an programme of events relating to the Ussher Birds Notes collection, held in RIA Library. In 2024, the Library received funding from the Heritage Council as part of the Heritage Stewardship Fund for a project entitled, ‘The Birds of Ireland: Curating the Richard J. Ussher Collection at the Royal Irish Academy’. This project aimed to secure the long-term preservation, access, and discovery of material from the Ussher Bird Notes Collection through a programme of archival cataloguing, digitisation and outreach. The Ussher Bird Notes Digital Archive was launched in May 2025, and included digital images, with accompanying metadata, of 900 selected items from the collection. Detailed cataloguing of over 9000 items from the collection was also completed and researchers can contact library@ria.ie for more information about this listing. 

Thanks to a second tranche of funding from the Heritage Stewardship Fund, granted in 2025, the remainder of the Ussher Bird Notes Collection will be catalogued and more material will be added to the digital archive in due course.

A Naturalist’s Record: Stories from the Collections of R. J. Ussher

Library Lunchtime Lecture by Dr Paul Mullarkey, National Museum of Ireland. Second lecture in a series on topics related to the Book of Fenagh exhibition 'Book of Fenagh 500th anniversary'
The Book of Fenagh (RIA MS 23 P 26), an Irish manuscript commissioned in 1516, tells the story of the life of St Caillín, founder of the early Christian monastic community at Fenagh. The manuscript reflects the politics of early sixteenth-century north Connacht, with the saint’s life being used for propaganda purposes. It is the work of an expert scribe, Muirgheas Ó Maoilchonaire, and is an excellent example of late medieval Irish manuscript production. In August of 2016 the Academy Library organised an exhibition (now available online)and lecture series to celebrate the the 500th anniversary of the Book of Fenagh.

The shrine of St Caillín of Fenagh and its place in Irish late medieval art

The Book of Uí Mhaine is one of the most important manuscripts of late  medieval Ireland. Its size, scope and extent, the range of texts it encompasses and its illumination all mark it out as one of the outstanding productions of Irish scholarship in this period. Written in the late fourteenth century for Muircheartach Ó Ceallaigh (†1407) Lord-Bishop of Clonfert, and subsequently associated closely with the O’Kelly family, it is a veritable treasure trove of traditional Irish history and learning.  In addition to lengthy genealogical tracts on the Uí Mhaine in South Galway and on many notable Irish families, it contains versions of the Bansheanchas, the Dindsheanchas, Cóir Anmann, wisdom texts, glossaries, poetry and many other compositions.

Following highly successful conferences on Lebor na hUidre (2012) and the Book of Ballymote (2015), speakers at the conference on the Book of Uí Mhaine discussed its background and structure, its artistic illumination, its place in Irish intellectual life of the time and its subsequent history.

The Dinnsheanchas text in the Book of Uí Mhaine

Michael MacDonagh is Chief Archaeologist in the National Monuments Service of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. In this podcast he talks of the opportunities and challenges of preserving Ireland’s past and managing our archaeological heritage. Against the 150th anniversary of the first legislation that led to the state assuming responsibility for our most iconic national monuments, he discusses plans for a new national heritage plan ‘Heritage Ireland 2030’, to build a shared vision for our heritage and how it will be valued and protected for future generations so that the authentic tale of Ireland’s past can be cherished and enjoyed by all.

About the speaker 

Michael MacDonagh took up the post of Chief Archaeologist in the National Monument Service of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in 2018. Following graduation from UCD and an early career in commercial and public sector archaeology across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Berlin, he joined the Department from Transport Infrastructure Ireland, having spent the previous four years on secondment with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in the North South Ministerial Council Joint Secretariat. He is a former Chair of the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland, the professional body representing archaeologists working in Ireland.

Placing Value On Our Past Managing Ireland’s Archaeology Michael MacDonagh

Lebor na hUidre (LU) is the oldest manuscript we have that is written entirely in the Irish language. It contains the earliest versions to have been transmitted to us of some of the  most celebrated Old Irish sagas: Táin Bó Cuailnge, Togail Bruidne Da Derga, Fled Bricrenn, Mesca Ulad, Tochmarc Emere and several others, in addition to much material of a historical or religious nature. Included in the latter is Amra Choluim Chille, believed by many to have been written shortly after the saint’s death and therefore it would be the oldest continuous text we have in  Irish. 

Given LU’s unique position, it is not surprising that aspects of its content and composition have been the subject of research and discussion. One of the most important studies to be carried out was that of R.I. Best ‘Notes on the script of Lebor na hUidre’, which appeared in volume 6 of the Royal Irish Academy’s journal Ériu a hundred years ago. In this paper Best identified three separate scribal hands that were involved in writing the manuscript and his important findings were incorporated in the diplomatic edition of the text that he and O.J. Bergin published for the Academy in 1929. 

As there have been few thorough studies of LU as a whole since that time, it was thought timely to look again at this important manuscript and it was felt that this would best be achieved through a conference.

The conference, organised jointly by the Library of the Academy and by NUI Maynooth, took place 22-3 November and proved to be an outstanding success with over 110 delegates in attendance. Several of those who attended travelled from institutes as far afield as Switzerland, The Netherlands, Germany and Russia.  The conference was opened by Academy President, Luke O’Connor Drury. 

Papers were read by 10 speakers representing 7 institutes of higher learning in Ireland and the UK: Cambridge, Edinburgh, UCC, NUIG, DIAS, QUB and NUI Maynooth, and they addressed issues such as the hands found in LU, the language of some of the texts, the background to its compilation and aspects of its later history.  As a result of the conference, it can be stated with confidence that our thinking in relation to LU has undergone fundamental change – especially with regard to the hands identified in the MS, the objectives of its scribes, its date and its later history.  www.ria.ie/codices-hibernenses…i-i-lebor-na-huidre
