Not much to say about this one. Nic Jones. Yeah. Child #216, aka The Mother's Malison, aka Clyde Water and other variations.

While I prefer the live version he recorded as 'Clyde Water,' it was the classic Penguin Eggs version that came on in the car lastweek as the ipod shuffled its way through the drive to pick up the kids. I found myself working out a light harmony part, and thinking up how to arrange it for guitar. As I worked through it I tried to add different things - a third harmony, some percussion, some wind instruments - but decided it was best left relatively simple with just the guitar, a mandolin part reinforcing the melody, and the two vocal parts. As usual with me there's some extraneous background noises as well.

Up later than usual as I was listening to the streaming broadcast of the Philadelphia Folk Festival and wishing I was there... texting my buddy Wally who IS there while the sets were going is kind of fun. But the real magic at the Fest is in the campgrounds. Hoping to listen in again tomorrow (at iphillyradio.com) as Soundcloud favorite Hilary Dirlam takes the main stage (according to the schedule I just found) with her band the Orpheus Supertones at 5:05!  Maybe one of these years my tub bass and I will get back there.

Pic: Usually I weed out all my tomato volunteers, but this year I left most of them in as long as they weren't bothering anything else. Imagine my surprise this afternoon as I found these ripe guys in my asparagus bed. I grew Copias last year but didn't get any seeds this year. We sliced 'em down tonight and had them with balsamic & olive oil, salt and pepper, Lovely. Hopefully the rest will ripen before the late blight that's hit Chester County this year kills the plant...

The Drowned Lovers

A song about my great-great Irish grandfather, Edward Jennings, who was awarded the Victoria Cross following action at the Siege of Lucknow, India in 1857. The photograph shows him wearing the VC and campaign medals from Ghuznee in the Anglo-Afghan War (1839), the Battle of Aliwal (1st Sikh War 1846) and the Indian Mutiny Medal.
He would have gained a commission, had he not been illiterate, and he spent his later years employed as a road sweeper in North Shields. His VC, which he sold to a private collector during hard times, is now in a military museum. Several years ago, thanks to the efforts of other local descendants who I have never met, a stone was erected on his grave in a ceremony attended by an honour guard from the Royal Horse Artillery. His name also appears on a commemorative monument in his hometown in Ireland. I'd never known of his existence until recently.
