you can check out what I do at www.markhole.com but this is my old band. I was the singer, Sam Hegedus was the G-tar man, Simon (Bob) Desborough was on Bass and Mr Dan Wylie was on Drums. It's over now but I figured anyone who liked what we did would want to hear the old tunes. So I'm up loading them all.

The seed is spreading

Musically speaking, the 21st century is a potential wasteland of pastiche and repetition, already engulfed by mind-numbing covers, regurgitated monotonous drawlings and wannabe Dylans. Thank God then that the embers of originality are still smouldering somewhere. Indeed, the roots of this hope are already burying themselves and the rain of public opinion is moistening the soil. I speak of The Seed - and don't scoff at my over-zealous epic poetics because this band deserve as much. They make you buzz about a musical moment that none of us born after 1980 have had the chance to enjoy…yet.

The Seed have balls. You won't find an apologetic drifting middle section that so epitomises the likes of Coldplay and Travis. You won't find a meek solo that stays safe by the melody or a hallmark card lyric that makes you cringe. The Seed riffs are fresh, the solos are raw, the vocal is superb, soaring, rich and the lyrics are often bizarre, sometimes cheeky and full of creative mind. These are musicians by the way. Often it's the case that a group of guys with the best spirits in the world will thrash out something energetic, sing something with gusto and decorate the drum-kit with the best-intentioned frills…but it just won't sound very good. Not with The Seed. Bob on the bass colours the chords and the rhythm, steady, funky, he is as the best bassists are - an unsung hero of syncopated sexiness. Dan drums with the intuition and intricacy of a jazz player, but with the boldness of an old rocker. And, if anyone hadn't noticed that it still remains a startling problem for many - he can keep in time. Sam is I believe destined for the status afforded to few guitarists - the league of Clapton, Knopfler, Hendrix. He has a great feel for it, phrasing, an ease with it that makes him stand out and it's clear he is doing his own thing. The licks, the fills, the catchy style of the opening riffs - it's his sound and it is tasty stuff. And Mark, the man with the mic, can really sing, with a tremendous range, he'll break into a blues scat-style flow as easily as he'll blast out a dirty rock chorus. Jumping, skipping, cavorting around the stage, doing press-ups mid song (in truth), this is the forgotten front man, a charismatic contagious and undeniably watchable treat.

So what is the style? I don't know…umm…it's…The Seed. It's new and innovative, but don't be worried that you're in for a rock/pop version of Poulenc with odd clashes and 162/33 tempo that apparently 'takes music forward'. No, Seed songs are all accessible. It's a jazz/funk/reggae fusion with soul and a little bit of rock, blues and ska as well…with the exception that it really is. There's nothing worse than a band describing themselves by referring to as many styles as they can, but this description really rings true here. A laid back MTV base guitar riff will turn into a soulful driving chorus will turn into a Clash-esque dirty ska thing will turn into… You must hear it. It's arranged superbly and produced with a sound free of the clinical nonsense so much radio ga-ga becomes trapped by. Comparisons, if you need them, float around in the excited murmur of post-gig conversations - "like the early Chilli Peppers" and "Sublime"…literally.
 
They look good. They are lovely young men. They represent something that I think has lost its way - an unpretentious and unguarded approach to this beautiful thing called live music. See them. Listen to them. Let the seed grow within you and a beautiful feeling will flower.
 
Very sad indeed that The Seed is dead. "Brake Down" was the last song we recorded together before it all started to fall apart..... we went on a brake.....down a slippery slope towards our own demise. We tried to keep it together and even met a possible savior in Mr.Brown's top form studio..... helping us through he gave us a new direction, some sort of hope. So we recorded 5 last songs and put together a new (and in Mr.Brown's opinion best yet) EP named 'Kiss The Seed' which you'll find this very moment on www.myspace.com/myseed and can buy right here right now, my plan is to sell all the copys we had made and get The Seed in the Swan for a pint to hug it out.... for gods sake.... before you go, listen to the last song The Seed ever wrote and never got to record properly.
