Coming in mid September is an absolutely lovely, pastorally infused, first album from Enofa (Ross Baker), entitled, “Arboretum”. Ross had released a collaborative album with us a few years back under the name, Middlemarch. His partner on that “Wolf Hall” release, Dimitris Avramidis, also contributes to this new effort as well.

For Ross, nature, and the inspiration derived from walking among the trees in the park and nature preserve near his home, plays a large part in the overall tone of this one long beautiful track. Like the Arboreta, which are regularly crafted to contain a range of contrasting shapes and colours, which gives them a very unique look and atmosphere,  this wondrous soundscape of sorts, incorporating field recordings, moody guitars and synth, and electronic treatments perfectly reflects the calming and mysterious feel of the long and languid  glorious English days of the moment. Wind chimes…the crackle of leaves underfoot….the light, swirling wind in the treetops…the sun breaking through the clouds…put this album on and you will find yourself strolling there as well!

TRS078 will come in two very limited, physical versions. The first, deluxe handmade version comes in an edition of just 50 copies. Each of these comes in the form of a collaged, stamped and hand worked vintage art deco, tri-fold photo folder, w/original photograph. Within each are collaged, vintage arboreal prints, dried leaves, and other arboreal ephemera. Each folder is extensively hand artified, and comes strung with a stamped tag made from an antique British cigarette card. Each comes with an attached, stamped black envelope containing a factory pressed CD, held on with an obi strip.

There is also a hand made standard version of Arboretum in an edition of 50 copies. These come in hand worked and altered, black digipaks, also with factory pressed discs.

Zoltan Fecso - Liquid Talk

When ACL first started producing mixes, I knew that I didn't just want to invite artists and labels. We've always imagined ACL as a part of a broader community. As such I've often invited mixes from amateurs, from listeners and fellow critics. This mix is one of those.

Philippe Requena is a music lover who lives near Paris, and has been producing mixes casually for some time now, just putting them out once he's gathered enough tracks and samples. We will be featuring more of his mixes in the near future.

Dragon’s Eye Recordings is pleased to welcome back Kamran Sadeghi for his first release on the label since 2008. On BETWEEN US, Sadeghi explores life in quarantine by directing his listening attention towards the element of our homes that is both sheltering us and giving us a glimpse of the outside world—the window.

BETWEEN US was created using field recordings captured with DIY contact microphones attached to the glass window of Sadeghi’s home in Brooklyn. These protective barriers in the buildings we inhabit operate as a filter from the outside elements. Sadeghi describes the impulse of "wanting to hear the sound outside as it was being transformed to what I was hearing inside." Each recording's tonal slips due to the presence of sonic artifacts such as resonance, noise, low rumble, feedback, and cyclical hum (caused, in part, by the microphones' excessive gain) suggests a gauzy, shifting passage of time at a distance.

2020 plays out to the sound of "Ghost Sounds" by Polaroid Notes, who returns to the British label Whitelabrecs following 2017’s ‘Unsung Memories’.

"Ghost Sounds" treads the cinematic lines of atmospheric piano and electronic ambient music, with unsettling undercurrents which occasionally creep into view. It has been in production since November 2019 as the sound of Polaroid Notes was pushed to develop a wider variety. The recording methods, effects and techniques were painstakingly adapted through experimentation and some truly spooky moments were captured. From here, "Ghost Sounds" became an obvious working title for the album.

The basic approach behind Polaroid Notes album is an attempt to deal with our weird and uncertain times in politics, health, social separation, isolation and cocooning. "Ghost Sounds" tries to capture this strange atmosphere - somewhere between deep despair, silent hope and the wish to wake up from restless and unfullfillable dreams.

The album artwork features photographs by Polaroid Notes shot during heavy snowfall in the first few winter days of 2020 in the Black Forest.
