"Al Mursal" is a song performed and composed by Mohammed Wardi. It is the title track of Wardi's "Al Mursal" album, the highest selling Sudanese album of all time. The lyrics are written by Mohammed Ali Abu Gataati, a prominent poet from Omdurman and a frequent collaborator with Wardi. It is alleged that these song lyrics were inspired by his experience of sending love letters to his elder sister's friend whom he was in love with, to which she never responded.

مسكين البدا يأمل
miskeen al bada ya‘amil
Unfortunate is he who has begun to hope

أملو يغلبو تحقيقه
amalu yighalbu tahgeegu 
A hope that he cannot make a reality (be achieved)

والعاشقة جفا المعشوق
wal-’aashga jafa al ma’shoog
For his beloved has abandoned him

وا سهرو ونشاف ريقو
waa saharu wa nashaaf reegu
Tonight he stays up, his mouth is dry

امش قول ليهو يا المرسال عساه يراعي ملهوفو
amish gool leyhu ya al-mursaal ‘asaahu yiraa’i malhoofu
Oh messenger go talk to the beloved, perhaps she will take care of him 

حبيبك و بي وراك جارت عليهو وخانتو ظروفو
habeebak wa bey waraak jaarat ‘aleyhu wa khaanatu zuroofu
Tell her he loves her but it’s out of his hands(I think this should be translated in second person)

فقد صبرو شرد نومو
fagad sabru, sharad nomu 
He’s lost patience, he’s lost sleep

لهيب الشوق خنق جوفو
laheeb ash-shog khanag jofu
He’s being suffocated by flames of longing


نحول جسمو شحوب لونو
nahool jismu shahoob lonu
His body is thin, his skin is pale

براك أحسن تعال شوفو
baraak ahsan ta’aal shoofu
You better come see for yourself

I tell my heart to forget, but its love increases, and with it increases my pain

khataabaati al bawadeeha tagool la bitamshi la haaja
You’d think the letters I’m sending aren’t being delivered 

وديت ليهو زول مرسال والمرسال مشى وما جا
waddeyt leyhu zol mursaal wa al-mursaal masha wa ma ja
I sent a messenger to my beloved and he departed, never to return

بقيت انا والنجوم بالليل سوا نساهر ونتناجى
bigeet ana w al nujoom billeyl sawa’ nasaahir wa natnaaja
Now it’s just me and the stars, staying up at night, whispering to each other

والناس اللي كانو سبب رموني وبقو فراجة
waan-naas al-kaanu sababu ramoni wa bigu farraaja 
And the people responsible have abandoned me and become bystanders
