Hailing from local open mic nights and the front porches of Starkville, Mississippi, the Tombigbees have expanded upon their humble beginnings with the release of their debut album, "Starkgrass". The diverse musical influences of the group has manifested in a sound that challenges traditional conceptions of Americana, Bluegrass, and Folk music with a genre of their own, rightfully named "Starkgrass".

Hailing from local open mic nights and the front porches of Starkville, Mississippi, the Tombigbees offer a wide variety of sound. Their sound has been described as “Old-time revival with hints of folk-punk and country-blues”, but if you ask them what genre of music they play, it’s usually “Starkgrass”. The original lineup consisted of Tré “Danger” Watts on the upright bass and fiddle, Brent Varner on guitar, John Ford Harrison on banjo, Taylor Morgan on the washboard, and Hayden "Thunder McCloud" Ellis on mandolin. All five of the original members are from Jackson, Mississippi. During the summer of 2013, Charlie Culpepper from Boone, North Carolina, with his Piedmont style of blues guitar, found the “Bigbees” playing a local open mic night and has been a staple ever since. Evan Alderman and John "Chicken Pickin'" Pipper have also joined the group as of Fall of 2014 to alter the sound even more.

The current lineup consists of Charlie Culpepper on banjo, guitar, bass and harmonica; Brent Varner on bass, guitar, dobro and harmonica; Hayden Ellis on guitar, mandolin and bass; Anna Katherine Coker on vocals; Evan Alderman on drums/percussion; John Pipper on lead guitar; and Phil Thompson on the fiddle.
