Foundations

In the spring of 2014, Andy and Brandon went on a late-night walk through a neighborhood near their college campus, eventually finding themselves lying on their backs in the grassy center of a roundabout, talking about life. On February 14th of the following year, they shared their first piece of music together as Roundabouts. “Island in the Stars” is a recollection of that nascent memory and serves as an ode to a decade of Roundabouts.

The monologue originates from the second paragraph of a creative writing piece Brandon wrote in April 2015 called “Sunbeam Dust...”. The coordinates Andy recites belong to that very same roundabout in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

It was a year since we returned to the island. He and I left home and cut through the university, heading toward the field. They had burned the grass, and everything but the worn-down path was blackened more than the night. Who “they” were is unclear. We found our way to a streetlamp neighborhood, following the same path past those same lighted windows, while creatures—hiding in plain sight—watched with tentative ease. Once we arrived to our roundabout island, we reclaimed our dominance and lay in the center of our land. The sky’s horizon split two shades of blue as contrails cut a gaping fragment through the suburban stars. The moon was near perfection, outshining the tall and creaking incandescent watch-lights. Our motionsick eyes made us believe a planet above shivered and crawled, but it never truly moved from the heavens. And as we lay there, sprawled carelessly in the convalescing grass, we were silent. We let the passing wind speak for us. We were the transitory rulers of time.
