Volume 1 was done about 10 years ago with all the usual suspects in terms of SP-1200 (SP-12) production.  Since I've become more and more of an audio file as of late, I thought I'd dig a little deeper into the SP-1200 catalog since I just love that 12 bit, crunchy sound.  Half the fun of the mix was doing the research of production equipment used in the making of different classic joints to confirm SP-1200 usage.  I used the old "double source" system of verifying whether the 1200 was actually used on different songs or albums.  In other words, if I read/heard two separate interviews where a given producer confirmed using the SP-1200 in some shape or form (whether for the whole beat or just the drums) that song became mix eligible.  As with all of my mixes, quite a bit of time and energy went into crafting this labor of love.  Hope you all enjoy!

I've been streaming De La Soul's music all weekend (if you haven't been, PLEASE run up their discography's numbers on any and EVERY DSP you use), and to me, their music can be summed up in one word: sunshine. Maybe it's because it was a gorgeous spring day years ago when I ripped open the plastic wrap on my "Stakes is High" CD only to blast it on repeat in my car for hours....or maybe it's because I was obsessed with their track "Can't Call It" in the summer of 2014....but whatever the reason, their music means so much to me - "Dinninit" was on one of the first mixes I made almost 15 years ago (sheesh) that I had the confidence to share publicly (aka burning to CD/hand out/email to friends) - when I was figuring out this DJ thing. And whatever mood I'm in, I know I can bump any De La Soul track and smile."

This mix was inspired by a Little Brother interview I read a few years ago. In the interview, I remember the interviewer asked the group why they went with the name "Little Brother." The group replied that they chose the name because they felt that musically, they were the "little brother" of groups like ATCQ, De La Soul, and Slum Village. In the spirit of that interview, I put together a 40 minute mix of Tribe, De La, and Slum V classics titled "Big Brother." Same BlendingNationSounds mixing style that all of you have come to know and love. Enjoy."


Big Brother

London’s very own Spin Doctor has been a busy boy while in Lockdown. He has created this epic mix dedicated to the powerhouse that is Q-Tip. Using 50 tracks to mark The Abstract’s 50th Birthday on Friday 10th April 2020.
 
The mix combinies a bunch of Tip’s productions, verses, samples, interviews and more. From A Tribe Called Quest to Solange, Nas to Quincey Jones, the mix explores all aspects of this man’s genius.
 
There are very few artists that can claim such impact on an entire genre, but A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip can do just that and more. As a member of what is widely agreed to be the greatest Hip-Hop group of all time, as a solo artist and as a producer for the great and the good, Q-Tip’s impact is immeasurable. Through his influence on the likes of J-Dilla, Kanye West and Pharrell, his influence can still be heard throughout all forms of Hip-Hop and Soul. Keep Bouncing!
