Step 1: Record 10 to 15 layers of continuous sound.

Step 2: Create a piece of music in which you only change the relative presence of those individual layers from Step 1 over time. Some light effects and panning are certainly fine, but the majority of the impact should be how the prominence of the individual layers changes.

all source material came from 4 or 8 bar loops i made via synthstrom deluge. the rest was LPF, HPF, gain and panning.

This track is inspired by the beautiful and unique landscape of Brittany, especially the Côte de Granit Rose.

It is intended to be the first part of an asynchronous trio - as inspired by this week's Disquiet Junto project. But it is also meant to be a composition on its own.

The Assignment: Record the second third of a trio.

I chose ‘Unmaking Music’ because of its physical materiality.

I had initially made a first version that contained many different movements on six tracks. That was pretty okay. But then I added some lurking piano - and somehow I felt that Raincat's hammering of whatever was the perfect partner for it. So I removed all the other tracks (only crow field recordings from Vienna remained, also the amplification of a kinda bell-like sounding Raincat “solo”). I didn't try to accompany Raincat, but let him accompany me. Thank you, Raincat, for your track!

I think this waits for a lead instrument. If someone wants to trio: The Piano is now 90bpm and somehow C-ish… (mainly CDCD, sometimes CDGC).

Unmaking Together: Krakenkraft joins Raincat [disquiet0698]

My contribution is on the right. 

For my part, I acted in a supporting role, starting with 14 Below Zero’s notes & Cherry Audio’s emulation of Octave Electronics’ 1976 CAT synth and then adding effects & editing where I felt appropriate. I had such a block on mixing this because I dislike hard panning for most things…so I mixed it in a way I preferred. After I felt good about that mix, I hard panned it again (except for some effects) and yeah, I still liked it. This should be fun for someone to add to next week.

Disquiet Junto Project 0698: Second Third
The Assignment: Record the second third of a trio.

There were many pieces I liked a lot from part 1 and I tried out a couple of combinations. 
I settled on the track by Samplair: https://soundcloud.com/user-248104983/disquiet0697. 

I combined this with a recording of some ‘extended technique’ zither. 
The extended technique being that the zither is excited using a fast rotating disc with a magnet attached to it. Depending on the frequency with which the magnet rotates (compared to the resonant frequencies of each string), it can force oscillations in one or more strings. The sound this produces is quite rich and complex with lots of movement.

Interestingly, the combination of these sounds, which can at times be quite harsh and distorted, with Samplair’s ‘nightmare carnival’ made for a track that I found… rather soothing.

For the second track, I went with “Mr. Bowed Jangles” by @tristan_louth_robins. I extended the length of it by looping the piece 2.5 times. Then created the right channel track using Dillon Bastan’s Max For Live granular looper device Iota in Ableton Live.

tercero (third) (ft. Torpid Scorpion & Marjorie Van Halteren) [Disquiet0699]

Suss Müsik has been traveling a lot lately. Thus is the nature of having to work for a living, a privileged state that appears to be accelerating toward some form of extinction. That’s probably a gripe for another Junto project.

On a recent trip to a U.S. city not to be named, Suss Müsik captured this strangely bucolic view outside the hotel window. Look closely, and you’ll see evidence of gentrification in the urban landscape: a new corporate housing unit dominates the left side of the image, obscured by a rich envelope of foliage. There appears to be some sort of mosque in the background, perhaps representing one of the orthodox faiths, next to what might be a church steeple. A rustic brick dwelling sits confidently where it was built some 300 years ago. Just beyond that is a budget hotel and what is likely a corporate office building, both filled to half-capacity.

The intention of Suss Müsik’s sonic interpretation was to demonstrate this weirdly haunting mashup: a blend of classical ‘old world’ architecture residing in an environment of aggressively digital commercialization. It is a scene where progress is measured in glass panels, beige is the new brown, innovation is temporal, and humans interaction relies on the conductivity of elemental particles. If you can imagine the setting of a Milan Kundera story retold through a series of YouTube Shorts, that’s sort of the vibe this image presents. 

This piece for cello, violin, piano, and electronics was recorded quickly to TASCAM 8-track. It is dedicated to Marc Weidenbaum and all participants of the Disquiet Junto community. Here’s to 700 chapters and counting.

Urban Entropy [Disquiet0700]

A response to Disquiet Junto prompt 0700, and based on a true story. From the window in my pantry I can see into my neighbor's back yard, where they have their hen house. Sometimes things happen. 

Unedited field recording, vintage Korg M3R. and reverb.

When I went outside this morning with my field recorder, one of the hens got agitated and started complaining loudly and repeatedly. She continued for almost exactly three and a half minutes, then stopped just as suddenly as she had started. The song is 3:43 minutes long.

Poses the age-old question, "Can Coraline make a serious song around a chicken sample?" What do you think?

Image of our front yard was taken through one of the bedroom windows. We’re lucky to live in a home surrounded by conifers and native California oaks. The calming view of the trees from the windows in some rooms make it seem like we’re in a forest rather than in a neighborhood with other people. I tried to convey the placid mood here. 

This was created in Ableton Live using Slate+Ash Choreographs, Spectres and Orchestral Tools Mirrors. Effects used were Soundtoys Spaceblender, Aberrant DSP SketchCassette II  and builtin reverb. A field recording from the front yard with a water fountain, birds, wind chimes and other ambient sounds was layered in. It was recorded using a Zoom F3 with right angle Pluggy mics. Happy 700th Disquiet Junto! Here’s to many more in the years ahead.
