The Assignment: Put a piece of music through the dryer.

I used "Waking Up in a Strange Room" from "Strange Rooms" https://krakenkraft.bandcamp.com/album/strange-rooms

The original from 2020 was heavy on delay and reverb. I removed all delay and reverb and even added two reverb-removing filters. So I "dryed" the sound. – I additionally made it shorter, because the dryer shrunked it. I changed all but the sequencer lines to strange sounds that are non-melodic, because the dryer changed the colour and totally ruined my clothing. – I like the result very much, because it's somehow an even wilder ride than the original.

This one got my head spinning, in a good way. It so happens that this week’s challenge coincided with the arrival of the Ferrous from Landscape FM, which is basically a spinning magnetic disc that can be used to create resonances with iron based materials, such as steel strings. So I took the literal route on that one. Dryers spin. So does the Ferrous. The second step was to imagine what would be cast off and what would be left behind should I send my music through a metaphorical dryer. I decided to focus both on what would be left behind and what would be cast off. First, the heaviest instrument in our household would be left behind, which happens to be a concert grand piano that my partner inherited from her father who used to play jazz standards on it - something that no one else in our household can do, sadly. Also left behind, would be anything that I could fit in my pocket and clutch onto, which happens to be the ferrous. And cast aside — all the other instruments, cables and fluff that clutters most electronic studios. Remaining are only two elements - the grand piano and the Ferrous in my pocket, which together are the sources for what you hear. The sounds were captured with a field record (which I could also cling to), which include fumbling and traffic noises. There is one effect “Fragments”— the only one that I could hang onto. And that’s it. There is something to be said for lint.

I hit the antler with broken piano hammers, twigs and wooden dowling sticks. The antler was attached to a block of wood along with a thin metal bowl. I recorded by attaching contact mics to the bowl. No effects.

This is an experiment with a Buchla 100 system that I recently built. Everything you hear is generated by the Buchla and fed through a spring reverb and then mixed live on a Tascam recorder to emulate the experience of recording directly to tape.

The Assignment: Share some recent music; get and give feedback

I have been working on a project: making a sort of mashup of sketches I’ve made over the last few years when away from home. I’ve made these on holidays, or when visiting friends: at times when I don’t have my usual music setup, but can do some noodling and experimenting, using music apps on a tablet and sometimes using a small semi-modular synth.
Since some of these sketches/fragments have nice sounds, or patterns, or themes, I thought I might select a bunch of them that I like, see if some match with respect to rhythm, tempo, tonality, vibe, and then see if I could maybe combine them into a longer piece (adding some extra parts or transitions as needed.

So this is a slightly edited version of a work in progress. Given the amount of material I have, the end result might be something like 3 different pieces that each are between 12 and 20 minutes long. We'll see...

I’m curious how you experience this. 
It will inevitably be, as a result of the process, a somewhat fragmented piece, consisting of bits that were not intended to fit together. Does it feel totally disjointed, like loose sand, random bits that do not gel? Or is it something of a musical journey (as I hope it might be). Would you like to stay a bit longer in the different segments? Or did you feel impatient to move on? Is it nice if some sounds or patterns or themes recur later on?

This track was inspired by this week's Disquiet Junto project: The barcode of the softcover Penguin edition of Daniel Kahneman's "Thinking, Fast and Slow" was used as the timeline for the rhythm, and the track was created with this beat as inspiration.
The other elements followed, found through intuition or happy accidents.
The result is a far groovier track than I initially assumed.

This was my contribution for Disquiet Junto Project 0712: Overclocked. The Assignment: What rhythm do you hear in a bar code?

I recently added Daphne Oram’s book An Individual Note: of Music, Sound, and Electronics, to my reading stack. So decided to use the barcode on the back cover for this project. The original intent was to create something that aligned with her more experimental work, but as often happens with these projects, it morphed into something different. This time, into an IDM like rhythm based track.

This was put together in Ableton Live 12 using mostly Dillon Bastan’s Rhythmorphic max for live MIDI effect. It’s a “non”-euclidian sequencer that uses the brightness values of an image or video to generate note patterns with modulations. A little bit like the way Daphne’s Oramics machine works with light and dark. I used the image of the barcode from the book on three different tracks using Slate + Ash and Madrona Labs instrument plugins. Also created additional tracks via a MIDI keyboard, as well as a couple of short, sliced and manipulated samples of her music and sound experiments. Hopefully she won’t mind too much with me using them.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
