What They Needs Mixtape Vol. 1

Attending Shambhala as my first ever music festival in 2012 was such a pivotal moment in my life - helping me find my path and be comfortable dancing down it. At the time I didn't even know I'd ever even want to be a DJ. You could say I was just a.... civilian. 

Playing the festival on my favourite stage 10 years later was a very mind-blowing full circle moment, and it means a lot to me to put this recording out there. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did making and playing it.

Thank you to everyone who filled up the dance floor, all the artists who's music is featured in the mix, all the people who made the event happen, and everyone who wanted to but couldn't be there - for whatever reason.

Civillian Live At The Grove - Shambhala 2022

This year I had the glorious honour to play at both the Spring and Fall Wicked Woods Music Festivals. I played in the first slot on Thursday afternoon at the Unicorn Stage in the Spring, and the second slot at the same stage in the Fall. I belted out two sets chocked full of the vibiest tunes I could round up to get people in the mood to groove for the rest of the whole weekend!

I finished my first set with some slow house beats, and by chance used one of the same songs to start my Fall set. So I thought, why the hell wouldn't I stitch these bad boys together, fix a few sections of dodgy vinyl fuzz, and give you all the chance to enjoy them both in one vibey mix! :)

I put a lot of effort into these sets, but due to some technical difficulties with the sound, I didn't get too crazy with the turntablism, and I had to cut a few mins out of my Spring set to stitch them together. Soooo I hope you enjoy this smooth, sultry Wicked Woods Mix, from your's truly, Benanas.

Truth be told I've wanted to do a bassy, grimey, street mix for a looong time but it only recently felt like the right moment. The title on this mix came first, born from a friendly photoshop from the homie @hogue-official. Almost all of the samples in here were ripped from Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas, as I wanted to thematically match the title to its contents, and it was a really fun exercise in sample digging and placement.

I hope you enjoy this foray into Halftime, Hip-Hop, Grime, Glitch, Trap, Phonk, and Bass music! And let me know if you like this vibe, cause maybe I'll do more like this 😊

Grand Theft Potassium

March began with my pulling tracks together from producers I was scheduled to perform alongside later that month for a spring promo mix - namely Sam Binga, Rider Shafique, DJ Madd, Handsome Tiger & Captivate.
As the month progressed and all of the gigs were cancelled, it evolved into this full-length concept mix. Some of the vocal tracks talk about anxiety and isolation while some songs take on entirely new significance, given the current COVID-19 context - others are so excessively contradictory to current mandates that they end up bordering on comical. I didn't set out with the mission of attaching a theme to the mix, so it certainly wanders - but as a whole, I feel it comes together cohesively.

I hope to see you in the dance one day soon, and that you're able to enjoy this in the meantime..
