A track for Naviar Records Haiku Challenge. The line 'Inhaling and exhaling' gave me the idea of having something with a lots of space, almost room to breath. The first section hopefully has that sense of inhaling and exhaling where the music comes in and out.

I’m seeing the blue sea

And Spring is in the air

Yamaguchi Sodo, whose real name was Nobuaki, was a haiku poet and a flood control expert during the Edo period. A contemporary of Matsuo Basho, Yamaguchi Sodo met the Great Master for the first time in 1675; the two poets soon became close friends and exchanged letters until the death of Basho in 1694.

Naviar Haiku is a weekly challenge to create a piece of music based on a poem. See https://www.naviarrecords.com/about/naviar-haiku/. This week's haiku is by Masaoka Shiki (d. 1902):

The ocean in June
Inhaling and exhaling
But never speaking

This led me to thinking of an ambient piece. The sound sources are mostly taken from my previous NH challenge (No 388, "To Calmer Seas") and it's a sort of slowly rotating highly distorted version of that piece, though there's a bit of Debussy's "La Mer" in there too.

Mizuhara Shuoshi was a 20th century Japanese poet. Shuoshi rebelled against the principles of emotional detachment in haiku, which he thought limited his ability to emotionally express himself through poetry: he started a magazine called Staggerbush which focused on a more romantic, lyrical type of haiku.

A wandering poet and ascetic Zen priest, Santōka was a disciple of Ogiwara Seisensui, one of the first poets to discard the traditional use of the 5-7-5 structure in haiku.

Santōka’s poetry emphasizes the necessity of sabi (solitude) in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment and serenity.

A joyful energetic little song about squirrels, based on a 12 second AI-generated generated clip created using Riffusion where I'd typed in the lyrics: "Super mega fluffy friendly happy squirrels with their fuzzy wuzzy tails and their twitchy little noses".

You might expect AI to have made this easy - it just gave a good starting point and I've spent quite a lot of time adding to it.
