Following on from their great EP on Woodsist and a summer of packed shows and increasing anticipation, we are very proud to bring you "Alight of Night," an album that more than delivers on the promise of their early singles. So what's it like, you ask? There is a definite flavor of Velvet Underground to be had, but Crystal Stilts' spectral avant-garage also takes in such far-flung references as: the spooked 60s Texas psych of 13th Floor Elevators and Red Crayola, the gothic blues/punk howl of Gun Club, the dark, experimental DIYism of early Flying Nun/Xpressway groups Pin Group and Plagal Grind, and a post-punk minimalism that brings to mind early Rough Trade and Factory releases. There is definitely a strong pop element as well, with the buzzsaw bubblegum of early Mary Chain b-sides and Meat Whiplash coming to mind.

These are all just rough points of reference, though -- "Alight of Night" is far more than just the sum of the bands influences. From the twang 'n' echo of "Crystal Stilts" to the primal pop stomp of "Prismatic Room" and the lovely jangle of "Shattered Shine," the band always adds something extra and unique to the mix, whether it's a fleeting dash of harmonica, a hypnotic organ line or just an amazing guitar sound. There is a unity of purpose at work here, a special mood conjured by the sounds, production and sequence of songs that lifts this album into the realm of the classics, and reveals new twists and turns on each listen.

Like all great albums, every piece just sits in exactly the right place, each song builds on the last and by the end you couldn't imagine changing anything about it at all. Eerily familiar but totally now, "Alight of Night" is a brilliantly haunting slice of rock primitivism.

Crystal Stilts - Departure

Kim Richey and Gareth Dunlop first met in early 2013 for a songwriting session. Dunlop says, "The first time I met Kim was to sit down and write a song in Nashville... I was a bit nervous!  What came out of that first meeting was a great friendship and a song called "Keep Coming Back", that was later featured in the TV show Nashville.  Since that time we’ve written the five songs that came together to make this EP."  
 
Richey adds, "I loved writing with Gareth from the very first time we got together.  There was an immediate musical connection, and we laugh a lot - always a good thing." 

Their diverse backgrounds may at first seem an unusual combination.  Dunlop was born and raised in East Belfast and became one of the most talked about young musicians in Northern Ireland. He was offered a publishing deal after his very first show at the famous Bluebird Café in Nashville and has gone on to make Nashville his second home. Gareth's songs have since been featured in numerous television shows ("House", "Cougar Town") and the film soundtracks ("Safe Haven").

Richey, born in Akron Ohio, is a two-time Grammy nominated songwriter who has released six critically acclaimed albums over the past two decades.  She has written two US #1 singles, had four others hit Top 10 and her songs have been recorded by Trisha Yearwood, Mary Chapin Carpenter, James Morrison, and many others, as well as contributed backing vocals on albums by Ryan Adams, Shawn Colvin, Jason Isbell and more.

So perhaps it's apt that, since Nashville brought these unique talents together, the EP be named in honour of "Music City" and, in turn, the TV show some of these songs inspired.

Formed in January 2009, Girls Names quickly garnered recognition outside of the confines of their hometown of Belfast with the release of their eponymous debut EP in 2010 through New York's Captured Tracks. A mini-album through London imprint Tough Love soon followed, setting the foundations for their critically acclaimed debut LP Dead To Me, released in April last year again by Tough Love in Europe and cult West Coast label Slumberland Records in the US. Earlier this year the band released a split 7” with Weird Dreams and contributed with a new single called ‘A Troubled See' that saw them spread far and wide.
 
Girls Names are now hinting at making their boldest and most exciting record to date. New single 'The New Life' clocks in at over 7 minutes and takes you on a journey that mirrors the feelings of a band living and working in economy stricken Northern Ireland - the perfect soundtrack of the bleakness to where they exist. The B-side on the 12” is a J D Twitch Optimo remix of the single.
 
This year the band expanded to a four-piece and has spent the last six months in virtual seclusion honing and developing a more progressive and expansive sound, feeding on the darker sides of Echo and The Bunnymen, Spacemen 3, The Birthday Party and David Bowie's Low before heading off on a triumphant Spring/Summer European tour culminating on their biggest and most successful shows to date at the prestigious Primavera sound festival in Barcelona.
 
A new full length is currently being finished off but for now it seems Girls Names are intent on making a lasting impression with single 'The New Life'. It certainly feels as though the band is ready to enter a new phase in their existence and they’re not afraid to take risks.
 
The band has also announced they will be playing a show in London on 26th October with Weird Dreams @ Birthdays.
