Plastic Religion

In the future world,
human beings had established a culture in which they completed their final moments together—
the 〈Pair Test〉.

There, dying alone was not seen as “failure,”
but as nothing more than sorrow.

Just as one cannot live entirely alone,
one cannot carry death alone.
The future world cherished this simple truth.

Yet—

When Satan Claus turned his gaze toward the present age,
a restless unease stirred within his chest.

People stared at their smartphones,
conversations faded,
pain was carried in silence,
and countless grew old with no one to rely on.

At this sight, he felt something between astonishment and anger,
and then realized:

“Humans stand so close to one another,
yet why are they so far apart…?”

Alongside his anger,
a faint shadow of sadness spread within him.

To restore the “right ending”

For Satan Claus, the “right death” was a moment shared with another,
a moment when one could feel:
“Because you were here, I remained human until the very end.”

The Pair Test was the ritual to bring forth such a death.

But he also understood—
this was not mere instruction, nor command.

“Perhaps humans are meant to need one another.”

A wish for humanity began to grow within him.

To fill the reaper’s own loneliness

Satan Claus was a watcher of souls.
Yet through endless time,
he himself had rarely touched another heart.

Thus, the emotions born in the Pair Test—
fear, closeness, courage, forgiveness, gratitude—
shone so brightly that they pierced his own heart.

“Humans… how can they possess such beautiful hearts?”

He chose Christmas,
because it was the one day when people could become just a little more gentle.

His decision

“No one truly desires a lonely death.
They simply do not know how to reach out.
Then… I shall remind them.”

He resurrected sages of the past and set impossible Pair Tests.
Not to lead them to death, but—

to create a chance to reach for another’s hand.

“To need someone is not weakness.
It is proof of being alive.”

After the Pair Test

When the trials ended,
Satan Claus always walked alone through the city.

Shimmering illuminations.
People staring at their phones.
Those laughing, those crying—
their inner hearts unseen by anyone.

He stopped and whispered:

“Perhaps… it is pain itself that makes humans seek one another.”

His words carried neither anger nor scorn.
Only a gentle understanding of humanity,
even from a reaper.

And he smiled quietly.

“The right death lies at the end of the right life.
If they can remember that, it is enough.”

The hem of his black robe swayed in the wind,
and he vanished into the darkness.

As though he himself were a shadow born to save loneliness.
