Zygmunt Bauman is a leading figure of contemporary social thought. His work ranges across issues of ethics, culture and politics and he is known for his analyses of the links between modernity, postmodern societies and consumerism. He has written extensively about the condition of work in the present. The moral substance of Bauman’s work is a refusal to accept that the world cannot be made differently. He was awarded the European Amalfi Prize for Sociology and Social Sciences in 1992, the Theodor W. Adorno Award of the city of Frankfurt in 1998 and in 2010 jointly with Alain Touraine, the Príncipe de Asturias Prize for Communication and the Humanities. Emeritus Professor at the University of Leeds his recent books include: Work, Consumerism and the New Poor (2005); Liquid Times: Living in an Age of Uncertainty (2006); Collateral Damage: Social Inequalities in a Global Age (2011); Does the Richness of the Few Benefit Us All? (2013).
