When we go through more emotional, expansive and ambient-ish sounds, we tend to experience a more cerebral and sentimental response, that we interpret on a deeper level. On the other hand, when things get groovier, syncopated and sharp, our bodies instinctively start moving to the rhythms. 

I've always found the intersection of these "two worlds" fascinating. Trying to create a space where they seamlessly merge, allowing for a continuous flow between introspection and physical expression"

Musician, producer and audio engineer Andrew Nerviano’s work under the Plebeian moniker over the past several years is nothing if not distinctive; a heady blend of syrupy low-end, delicate sonic accents, and swirling rhythmic figures that give his work a hypnotic, psychedelic quality that’s as evocative as it is unique. Bringing his brand of shapeshifting techno to French label Grid this year, the artist has put forth a four-track EP titled Contrast, merging adventurous, deep-listening sensibilities with a driving focus on the dancefloor.
Based in New York, Nerviano was a cornerstone of the label and party series Sweat Equity, which saw early releases from Ben Ritz, Overland and Deli Girls, among others, a string of projects tied together by sonic intensity and Nerviano’s work engineering and/or mastering each of the releases on the label. During that time, he was conceptualising and honing the dimensions of the sonic palette of his own project, delving into modular synthesis, digital processing and a hybrid studio practice that mixed a range of outboard gear with a range of compositional techniques.
He would follow up a pair of records on his own imprint with releases from Munich’s Molten Moods and Ronan’s Eternal Ocean imprint, as well as contributions on releases from UWU Dust Bath, Pseudonym and Index, before announcing his latest with Grid this spring. The record in draws its core material from a set conceptualised and performed at the inaugural edition of Dripping, a music fest organsed in New Jersey by fellow New York techno mainstay Relaxer.

In just a few years, Neida has established himself as one of the rising stars of the French electronic music scene.

Thanks to notable releases on a diversity of European record labels (from Nehza Records to Maloca Records, including Bad Tips, Scuffed Recordings, Le Ciel Records…), the Bordeaux-based producer embodies a new wave of artists who are as comfortable in the studio as they are behind the decks. Neida, who feeds the USB sticks of many of his peers—as was the case with his rave anthem 'False Nostalgia,' which was played at numerous festivals and European clubs in 2023—also masters the art of the dancefloor. Drawing inspiration from the best (from the legendary virtuosity of Ben UFO to the technical prowess of Batu and the versatility of CCL), Neida looks to England for the sounds that define his style, blending sharp breaks, techno realms, pronounced basslines, and constant rhythmic play. 

His tracks and sets, balancing between frenzy and melancholy, reflect the musical eclecticism of his youth when he used to learn to drum. Seen at various festivals and major venues of French and European club culture, Neida also has a special connection with the Bordeaux-based IBOAT, where he is a resident. It is in this city, in the South-West of France, that he co-founded SUPER Daronne, a collective that has been stirring up Bordeaux's nightlife since 2017 and is also behind the Supercamp festival.

Formerly the artistic director of Sarcus Festival, he now performs with the Sarcus Soundsystem, captivating audiences with hypnotic dub, electro, bass, and techno. As a programmer for Badaboum and the Hey Stranger! series, he blends post-punk, dub, ambient, and IDM influences. Drawn to outdoor festivals and intimate events, Ubik creates immersive experiences for diverse audiences.

This week, we’re here with a mix from Aotearoa’s very own Foxtrot, an eclectic deejay now based in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Her mix starts out slow, pacing through dark atmospheric slower techno, before catching alight; trekking up through the bpms infused with fast-paced psychedelic techno, trance & bass.

Foxtrot is a DJ born & bred in the realm of student radio, namely RDU 98.5fm in Otautahi / Christchurch. A longtime talented selector, convinced to give deejaying a go, she shone through her fast, genre-defying sets, gracing festivals and clubs up and down the motu in the post pandemic era of dancing.

Now having returned home after 18 months abroad, she is back with a newly refined & selective taste, encompassing deep percussive rhythms, psychedelic-infused bass & spacey bleep blops. Catch her over the NYE period at Aotearoa’s premier underground boutique electronic music festival, Twisted Frequency @twistedfrequencyfestival, as they celebrate their tenth anniversary.
