At first, it was small. The subtle shifting of the wind when they walked, the odd sense that something unseen watched them from the dark corners of their lives. Then, as the days wore on, the changes became more pronounced. They felt the gift deep inside them, stirring in ways they couldn’t explain. A cold, pressing weight, like a hand on the back of their neck, guiding their steps. It spoke to them in riddles, shaping their thoughts, bending their wills to a cause they could not understand.

They followed, of course. For what choice did they have? Their sacrifice had been made, and now they were bound by something larger than themselves.

The master, as they came to think of it, was never seen. There were no voices, no faces, no forms to touch. But it was always there, pressing upon their minds, shaping their dreams, drawing their actions with invisible strings. The renegades knew only that they were no longer free. Not in the way they had once understood freedom.

They had become instruments of something vast and unknowable, their will no longer theirs but a tool for an unseen hand. In their quest for power, they had chained themselves to a master who cared nothing for them beyond their utility. The gift they had sought had come at a price—a price paid in their very essence, in the essence of who they had been.
