Always There 2025 - Worktape

Someone took a picture of a man being shot and they put it on the faceless book.
Everyone has seen it, & they say they are disgusted, but they go back for another look
Somebody says, “We really oughta do something,” and the thumbs up start multiplying.
Then they come to a consensus; take it down.

Another little child gets sick and then dies from the water that she’s been drinking.
People run wild, saying, “Oh that poor child. What were her parents thinking?”
hen the man from DC says we need a study, and everybody’s in agreement.
When they see how much it’ll cost; take it down.

A man takes a gun in a movie theater and starts shooting people one by one.
Thoughts and prayers, prayers & thoughts, is this a battle we know can be won?
Help the mentally ill, but they see the bill, change their mind, nothing can be done.
There has to be a better way; take it down.

People crying, people wailing, education’s failing and the kids are not being taught.
So they grab a DC buddy, do a million dollar study, & conclude it is the teachers fault.
What’ll it take to fix this mistake? Gonna need some better teachers for sure.
When they see how much it’ll cost; take it down.

When I was in school, they taught me a few simple rules.
I before E, except following C, always make sure subjects and verbs agree.
And when you’re doing fractions, always look for the common denominator.

I went down to the polling place, first Tuesday in November.
Senseless killing, numbers chilling, started to remember.
A man handed me his card, tried to shake my hand, I’d love to have your vote today.
But I thought about what I had seen; take it down.

Take It Down

Old rag dolls, little houses warped and dusty.
An old shoe box filled up with blue ribbons, a box of your favorite tunes.
Picture-covered walls, roller skates, a little rusty.
Seems as though as soon as you know ‘em, they grow up way too soon.

I don’t want to talk about her, ‘cause you know she is my daughter,
‘Cause I know where she’s been, winning and losing in the game of life.
She was my first, my baby, but she’s turned into a lady
And tomorrow at four she’ll become someone else’s wife.
Little chairs, photographs of long-lost playmates,
A napkin ring and two books of matches she got from a restaurant.
 Catered affairs, memories of her first big date.
Buttons, bows and bright fancy ribbons, my own little debutante.

I don’t know why people cry, they just seem to bore me.
Don’t they know children grow, they turn into the world.
There was a time I thought nursery rhymes and fairies existed.
But fate took a turn, look what I’ve learned, look what I’ve resisted.

Installment Number 10 in my "1 song per month"....

And this month, I offer this song, "If We'd Just Trade Shoes "...

This song is about walking and talking - about our lives, our dreams, in the hope of
bridging the distance between all of us. We need to change the dialog to one of 
openness, with less derision and public shaming. That said, admittedly, walking the walk 
is much harder than singing a line in a song, but I still believe that knowing someone
personally makes it less easy to be cruel....

"We would see with better eyes if we'd just trade shoes...."
