Parisian artist Assalm is back with his second album, “Slay”. Ten brand new original tracks blending elements of Electronica, Techno and dark Electro with the characteristic deep and atmospheric sound the French artist established in his debut album “Rivera”. While his debut though followed a more playful approach by even adding elements of Trap into the mix, Assalm’s sophomore album takes a more minimal and stripped down direction. The LP opener “Midnight” will immediately catch the listener’s attention with its atmosphere before the heavy hitters “Oblast” and “Valkyrie” kick in to get the blood pumping and set the mood for the rest of “Slay”. This is definitely Assalm’s most mature and complete outing to date but then again that’s probably only going to last until his next release. Either way, enjoy!

THIS TUNE STARTED AS AN EXCUSE FOR ME TO ENGINEER THE BEST VERSION OF AN AMEN BREAK I COULD. I FOUND A FLAC OF THE ORIGINAL VINYL ONLINE AND PITCHED AND CORRECTED IT MYSELF. I WAS EXTREMELY TIRED OF USING THE LOW BITRATE ONES FROM SAMPLE PACKS AND FIGURED I COULD DO IT BETTER.

THOSE LOW BITRATE ONES I WAS USING GOT ME THINKING THOUGH, AND I WANTED TO SEE IF I COULD FIND SOME GREAT BREAKS THAT I HADN’T HEARD BEFORE. I WOUND UP AT THE END OF A LONG INTERNET WORMHOLE WITH A HUGE COLLECTION OF RECORDED RAVE TAPES THAT HAD BEEN DIGITIZED FOR LEGACY’S SAKE. SAFE TO SAY, MY SAMPLE PACKS HAVE GOTTEN MUCH BIGGER. THESE ARE WHERE ALL THE MC VOICES, THAT ARE PLACED ALL OVER THE EP, COME FROM.

I HAD HAD A FEW OF THE SONGS THAT ENDED UP ON THIS EP DONE AT THAT POINT AND IT INSPIRED ME TO GO BACK IN AND TURN THEM INTO SOMETHING THAT FELT LIKE IT COULD BE PLACED ON A RAVE TAPE FROM THE LATE 90’S. DIGITALLY PLACING MYSELF IN A PLACE AND TIME THAT I NEVER WAS. I KNOW, ITS TERRIBLY DISINGENUOUS. 

I WAS LISTENING TO THOSE RAVE TAPES WHEN SOME KIND OF WHITE LABEL VERSION OF “L’AMOUR TOUJOURS” CAME ON DURING A SET. THE LEAD IN THIS SONG IS ME TRYING TO CONVEY THE EMOTIONS THE DANCERS MUST HAVE FELT IN A MORE MODERN WAY, WHILE STAYING TRUE TO THE FEELINGS OF THE ORIGINAL. IT MUST HAVE BEEN MIND BLOWING.
