The Cure

Bob Dylan said Tangled up in Blue took ten years to live and two years to write. Well, Based on a True Story, the new release from The Amber Bugs, took one crazy, messed up night way back in 2010 to live, and a mere 20 minutes to write. The problem though, was that doing the song justice would be a 13 year long journey of attempts and failures to create the version that the naïve young musician who wrote it was hearing in his head.

The song, tells the story of a night out that turns into a nightmare. A romantic encounter that ends in violence told from a position of vulnerability. This cinematic narrative demanded an orchestral arrangement that could both carry the weight of the story and allow room for storytelling to breathe. This is a balancing act that required 13 years of musical maturing to achieve.

 Getting this song right has been a long…. long obsession for Amber Bugs frontman Ben Kelly. Not usually one for wild assertions of mysticism he claims the song was written more through him than by him. It arrived one day and left him shaking as it flowed from his pen. That experience of being gifted a song by the universe left him with a feeling of responsibility to do it justice. The frankly awful 2010 home demo, and the improved but still incomplete 2016 Amber Bugs attempt are B-sides on the release, offering fans a deep dive into how a song can evolve through years of obsessive reworking.

 In a career brimming with eccentric, clever, infectious, and unique songwriting, 'Based on a True Story' stands as perhaps the most important milestone to date.

Right before the pandemic took hold London based Art-Rock 5 piece The Amber Bugs recorded their most ambitious body of work to date. Rat vs Mole is the climax of what came out of those sessions. Arabian inspired strings meet fuzzy guitars in a quirky tale that invites listeners along on the bands inside joke about undercover cop and gangster movies. Rat vs Mole is a bonkers musical screenplay with cinematic scale.
