There's a programme on ITV tonight called Dark Angel. It's about serial killer Mary Ann Cotton from West Auckland, the town next to the one I'm from. Three or four years ago my mum was doing our family tree and was shocked to find that Cotton's one surviving daughter married her great uncle - so we're not blood related but there's some skeletons in the past! I was facinated and did some research. I found out there was a Victorian nursery rhyme from the North East about Cotton, which I adapted to music. I wrote the additional verses and have played it at every single Amber Tree gig. Here's a version of it. Enjoy the show, it's gonna be grisly. #MaryAnnCotton #DarkAngel

Long history, this song.

2011 - recorded this as a new song demo when in my old band Jackdaws. I think we'd already started playing it and I recorded our riffs at home to help me write the vocals, so tons of credit due to bandmates Tom and Mike. This older demo sat on my hard drive until... 
2014 - I learnt some songs to play a short set with guitarist Gustav. I really liked what he did for this song, so found the old demo and recorded his part over it. More time sat on my hard drive, until... 
2015 - My bassist brother Jeff replaced my original synth bass part while we were waiting for some homemade beer to brew. I accidentally find Jackdaw Amy's backing vocal from an abandoned attempt to record this as a band. It's a different tempo, so one night I chop the vocal up and add some bits where I can in verse 2. It's subtle, but she is on it.
2016 - I recorded a mostly electronic EP. This track did just not fit.  At all.
2017 - I record a fully electronic EP. I find this again and think, "screw it, lets stick it online, life is too short".

Nearly SEVEN years have passed by now, god damn it.
