Bird Up

For Ivan

I pick a dandelion and blow it in the wind
I wish I could ever be as free as her and she flies
over the river where the swans are floating by
I don’t have a stem that I can part from
wonder why

I’ll be painting little shiny stars on your window 
until you believe they’re real
I will take the softest mountain air and bring it home for you
until you’re fully healed
We can’t be dandelions but we can learn just how to fly 
in our own way
And I’ll be sipping tea right by your side and tell you stories 
just as long as you’ll have me stay

They all think they know but they will never know me

And I watch the pretty little petals 
in the sky 
I don’t have the wind to push me forward
wonder why
