Max Levi Frieder is a 21-year-old artist who works in a variety of mediums, contexts and worlds. He is from Denver, Colorado but currently attends The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence where he is majoring in Painting (2012). Although trained in painting, his work focuses on community-based public art founded on inspired participation. He also studied abroad at the Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, for four months.

For the past three years Max has embarked upon five primary projects:

1. 2009 - Cross Country Bike Tour: Max and a companion RISD art student (Alan Johnson) biked from San Francisco to Rhode Island making public art in every state they went through. The trip took three months and totaled at 4000 miles. 

2. 2010 - The Traart Line:  An exhibit in the city of Providence consisting of a line of "thrown-away art" from RISD students. Over 3000 pieces were temporarily hung along electrical boxes, lamp posts, fences and trees with wire. Signs were displayed along the line saying “ Take any piece that you enjoy.” Over eighty percent of the pieces were taken by local people and art enthusiasts. 
  
3. 2010-2011 - The Long Lake Camp for the Arts Creative Director Position: For three months, Max painted murals with children at an arts camp in upstate NY. In three months he painted over twenty five murals with kids, ages eight to sixteen. He also experimented with onstage performance painting, rock climbing painting, horseback painting and a variety of other action-art activities.
  
4. 2010-2011 - The Foundstrument-Soundstrument: a large-scale percussion instrument made of found objects painted synesthetically, and attached to a bicycle. The Foundstrument had a two-day exhibition at the Providence Children’s Museum and now lives at the Rhode Island Recycling for Education Center.  


5.  The New Zealand Children’s Art House Mural Tour:  The first of it’s kind, this mural tour has affected the art life of ten communities all across New Zealand.  This website, www.maxlevifrieder.com, has been tracking all the murals and the stories that go along with this collaborative art form. Max wants this Mural Tour to be the beginning of something larger. The future of International Children’s public art has unimaginable potential, and this project is only the beginning.
