Hailing from North Somerset, UK post/prog-rock veterans BLUENECK have been at forefront of the European underground experimental scene since forming in 2000. They've released four critically-acclaimed albums; toured extensively across Europe with acts such as Cult of Luna and Mono; have soundtracked a number of independent films and had their work featured on NBC, HBO and SyFy channels; and are now mainstays of the European festival circuit (including a triumphant midnight set at Glastonbury 2014). However their most ambitious achievement – 3 years in the making – is new album KING NINE, released on Denovali Records in November.

Singer-songwriter Duncan Attwood's astonishingly affecting melancholy vocals have always been the chilly heart of Blueneck's music (2006's SCARS OF THE MIDWEST, 2009's THE FALLEN HOST, 2011's REPETITIONS), so fans were surprised when the band released the hushed, vocal-free soundtrack album EPILOGUE in 2012. However, work had begun by Attwood and fellow bandmembers Richard Sadler and Ben Paget on KING NINE in early 2011, in advance of the writing and recording of EPILOGUE. Continuing their ongoing relationship with Bristol UK producer/collaborator Mat Sampson, KING NINE has been a quiet labour of love – a deliberate, determined commitment to push Attwood's songcraft and singing to the fore. To make the most vibrant, accessible and exciting Blueneck record possible.

The band's three key musical influences go some way to explaining KING NINE's ambitious, expansive (but always accessible) scope: the electronica of Boards of Canada; the movie soundtracks of Ennio Morricone and John Carpenter; the melodicism and melancholia of Kid-A era Radiohead and Arcade Fire.

KING NINE's packaging arguably matches the ambition of the album itself. With new work from acclaimed artist and filmmaker Lasse Hoile (who previously worked with Porcupine Tree, Anathema and Opeth), KING NINE features unnerving scenes of Southern Gothic solitude from America's deep south, reminiscent of (oc)cult detective TV show ‘True Detective'.

Recorded at Phoenix Sound inside the world-famous Pinewood Studios – home of the British film industry and a location chosen by Michael Price as 'a haven for me in a noisy world' – December 17th marks his debut release as the latest addition to the Erased Tapes family in the form of 'A Stillness'; a four-track limited edition vinyl including music sheets and downloads.

Renowned for his work as film composer, producer and award-winning music editor, this small collection of songs shows a more personal side of Price, a chance for him to create music without any scripts and guidelines.

'I'm trying to create a small Stillness in a noisy, hyper-connected world. I wanted to make something personal and real, with musicians that I've known for a long time. Usually we've all got headphones on, chasing click tracks and fitting our performances to picture. It was time to get the headphones off, stop all the clocks and ticking, really connect musically and try to capture a moment. To be able to make something intimate and authentic in an often noisy world is a real pleasure.

When I heard what we had, there was only one collection of musicians and artists that felt a natural fit, and that was Erased Tapes. I'd always admired Robert's artistic vision, and the way that he created a nurturing, collaborative environment around the artists he worked with. Opening with subtle piano and the delicate strings of cellist Anne Müller, it suddenly morphs into a colossal ensemble piece with heavy drums and electronics.

"This song started as a simple piano line and while listening to it on loop over and over again some of the elements started to form one after the other, and depending on each other. I was working on a different song at the same time that had the drum section as a central instrument, and felt it was not going anywhere... In one of the sessions with Robert Raths (creative producer and founder of Erased Tapes) he suggested fusing the two songs together, which resulted in this faun-like version of Clarion after a few adjustments were made. It captured the foreshadowing character of the one piece, with the drive and rush-like feeling of the other piece, and therefore creating a very interesting tension" — Ben Lukas Boysen

The third album recorded under his own name, Mirage is Ben Lukas Boysen's most progressive and shape-shifting album to date. It follows 2013’s Gravity and the acclaimed 2016 full length Spells, a record as much admired by his peers as it was loved by fans that not only yielded remixes from Max Cooper and Tim Hecker, but also opened Jon Hopkins’ Late Night Tales compilation. Since then, Ben has been in demand for writing scores including his collaboration with cellist and composer Sebastian Plano, on the soundtrack for David OReilly’s landmark innovative video game Everything — the first video game ever to qualify for an Academy Award.
