You Are My Friend / Sylvester (1985) — 

Coming in at 123 beats per minute, the opening track of this continuous mix is a complete rework of Sylvester’s iconic tribute to his relationship with his backup singers Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes-Armstead (aka “The Weather Girls” and “Two Tons O' Fun”). The song's lyrics express themes of love, friendship, and loyalty, with Sylvester proclaiming his devotion to cherished companions. 

The original version (not a dance track), renowned for its energy and emotional depth, was recorded in front of a live audience at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House in 1981.  It's considered one of the highlights of his career and remains a cherished moment in music history. The reimagined version is a complete rework that is sure to please.  

Tell Me / Razor-N-Tape (2021) —

This is a standout track characterized by its infectious groove, funky bass line, and soulful vocals. It captures the essence of classic disco while incorporating modern production techniques. It dovetails nicely with Sylvester’s “You Are My Friend”.

I Just Can’t Get Enough / Herd & Fitz ft. Abigail Bailey (2006) — 

This dance floor anthem features an infectious rhythm, uplifting vibe, catchy melodies, and Bailey's amazingly soulful vocals. Released in 2006, the song gained significant success in the dance music scene and became a favorite in clubs and on radio playlists.

Can You Feel It / The Jacksons (1980) — 

Produced by legendary producer Quincy Jones and initially released in 1980, this uplifting and anthemic rework presents polished and powerful vocals and a catchy melody that stands the test of time.  Incorporating modern production techniques, electronic elements, and some outstanding new vocal arrangements and instrumental layers, this mashup combines elements of the late 70’s Earth, Wind & Fire track, "September”, with beats from the San Francisco-based designer, photographer and remixer, Alyx Andre. The reengineered piece has a fresh sound that appeals to a new generation of listeners while paying homage to the original.

Let’s Go ‘Round Again / Average White Band (1980) — 

This flashback track from Scottish funk and R&B band Average White Band conveys themes of love, reconciliation, and the desire to start anew in a relationship. Its upbeat tempo and infectious rhythm make it a favorite among funk and soul music fans, and this rendition is characterized by its catchy melody, smooth vocals, and funky groove.  

Wear It Out / Starguard (1979) — 

The final track in this mix is from DJ Pete Refreq, who works his digital layering and remixing talents on this late seventies dance track characterized by an infectious groove, catchy melody, and anthemic vocals by band members, Rochelle Runnells, Debra Anderson, and Janice Williams.

Here's my last mini dance remix, part of my Flagging in the Living Room series. This 25-minute compilation features some of my favorite lush disco and house tracks, reimagined by myself and others. I'm releasing it today to celebrate Cathedral City LGBTQ Days, the first Pride event of the 2024 season in California, held in the Palm Springs-adjacent enclave.

Respected DJ and producer Dimitri from Paris, known for his dedication to disco, expertly reimagines classic tracks with a modern twist without losing their original soul. His Full-Length Disco Remix of "Down To Love Town" showcases this talent, celebrated for its high-quality production, respect for the original material, and rejuvenation of classics for today's dance floors.

On Broadway (Mike and Tess Edit) / George Benson (1978)

Originally performed by The Drifters in 1963, "On Broadway" became iconic with George Benson's 1978 version, a significant hit highlighting his smooth jazz style, virtuosic guitar, and soulful vocals. 

The Mike and Tess Edit of George Benson's "On Broadway" revitalizes the track with modern production, appealing to original fans and new listeners who value the song's timeless quality mixed with contemporary sounds.

What Did You Do Today (The Audio Wrangler ReWerk) / The Ebony’s

The Ebonys, formed in 1968, were renowned for their lush soul ballads under Philadelphia International. This compilation features my refurbished version of "What Did You Do Today?", influenced by MikeandTess, renowned for reimagining classics, especially in disco, funk, and soul genres.

Finally Ready (Dimitri From Paris TSOP Remix Club Dub) / The Shapeshifters feat. Billy Porter (2021)

Released in the Spring of 2021, "Finally Ready" by The Shapeshifters featuring Billy Porter blends house and disco music elements, featuring Porter's amazingly powerful vocals. It quickly gained popularity within the dance music scene for its infectious energy and soulful vibe.   

Dimitri From Paris, a respected DJ and producer known for his love of the Philadelphia sound of the 1970s, infuses disco, funk, and soul into a mix that honors the original while updating it for today's dance floors.

Stand Back / Stevie Nicks (1983)

I close the mix out with"Stand Back" by Stevie Nicks, an American singer-songwriter known for her distinctive voice, mystical stage persona, and prolific career in rock music. She rose to fame as a prominent member of the band Fleetwood Mac and later pursued a successful solo career.

“Stand Back” was released in 1983 (on her album "The Wild Heart”) and is known for its energetic and driving beat, catchy melody, and distinctive vocals. The song incorporates rock, pop, and electronic music elements, featuring prominent synthesizers and a pulsating rhythm.

One interesting fact about "Stand Back" is that Prince, the legendary musician, contributed to its creation. Nicks has recounted how she was inspired to write the song after hearing Prince's "Little Red Corvette" on the radio while driving. She contacted Prince and played him a rough version of "Stand Back" on the piano. Prince then visited the studio and played synthesizers on the track, contributing to its distinctive sound.

"Stand Back" became one of Stevie Nicks' signature songs and remains a fan favorite. Various artists have covered it, which remains a staple of Nicks's live performances.

John Paul Young released "Love Is In The Air" in 1977. The song quickly became a worldwide pop hit, topping the charts globally. The Funkdamento Remix delivers a fresh, updated sound to the timeless track, while maintaining the recognizable and uplifting melody of the original song.

"Be a Rebel" (Kristopher X Reconstruction Mix) / New Order

"Be a Rebel" was released during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many artists sought to offer positivity and hope through their music. New Order described the song as a message to stay positive in challenging times. This remix adds a contemporary electronic and dance twist to the original track, blending Kristopher X's unique production style with New Order's iconic sound.

"Rhiannon" (Daniel G Van Olst Starless Skies Mix) / Fleetwood Mac

Originally released in 1975 and written by Stevie Nicks, this memorable remix of Fleetwood Mac's "Rhinnon" by fellow flagger (and San Francisco-based DJ and remixer) Daniel G. Van Olst offers a modern take on the iconic track. It seamlessly blends darker contemporary electronic and ambient elements with the original's haunting melody and mystical lyrics.

"Song for the Lonely" (Almighty Mix) / Cher

Produced by the British remix team Almighty, this chart-topping dance track transforms Cher's original pop song into an energetic dance anthem. It incorporates powerful beats and an uplifting tempo without losing the essence of the original.

"Never Can Say Goodbye" / Communards

This 1987 cover of the classic The Jackson 5 song by British pop duo Communards (Jimmy Somerville and Richard Coles) hit the charts globally. Remix master Shep Pettibone, renowned for his work in the 1980s and early 1990s as a remix artist and producer, enhances the original mix with extended instrumental sections, electronic beats, and a more pronounced dance rhythm that appeals to club audiences.

"Lovely Day (Jet Boot Jack Remix)” / Bill Withers
