My Life is Like a Merchant Ships Song

Hi, I'm Cameron. I make the Trying songs, mostly in my bedroom alone, but friends usually join me for live shows and recording help. If you listen, you'll probably notice that it's not just the guitar, drums, bass thing that most indie bands like. I got kind of bored with that but didn’t want to go electronic so I started using other instruments. You'll hear things like glockenspiel, violin, 12 string guitar, and melodica among others. It comes in part from that really layered sound of groups I admire like Arcade Fire, the Magnetic Fields, or some other '00s indie bands.

You might also notice a similarity to The Smiths, I adore them, like every mopey indie kid. I think there's a jangly, almost twee sense to my music that reminds me of them, even a bit of the dreamier influence of later '80s and '90s alt acts, but maybe that's just me. We don’t just have music though--we also have lyrics! I feel a little weirder telling you about that, like I’m putting words to the words that I already put to the music. I suppose you could play ‘Mopey Indie Kid Bingo’ and decide if I’m another Morrissey wanna-be or pulling off sweet, poetic justice to coming of age in the midwestern US. Maybe neither.
