London, Basement Jazz Club — “I Never Expected You To Stay (London Jazz Version)”

I returned to London,
but I came back as a smaller man.

Every night I descend into this basement,
where the air is thick enough
to hold a truth I never dared to speak.

I sit at the piano —
but I know it is not truly me who plays.
It is Merlin.
His hands.
His shadow.
His understanding of my regret.
I only lend him the weight of my sorrow,
and he turns it into sound.

The music that leaves this old upright
is not performance.
It is punishment.
Confession.
A slow unraveling of everything
I left undone.

I hear her in every chord —
the woman who danced in the half-light,
the woman I abandoned
to protect a life I don’t even want anymore.

Duty, they called it.
Order, they insisted.
But in this basement, with Merlin carrying my grief
into notes that crack like old stone,
I can finally admit it:

I walked away
because I was afraid to stay.

She expected nothing of me.
I offered her even less.
And now, each night,
I grieve both the man I was
and the man I refused to become.

Merlin plays through me,
and through him
I finally hear the truth:

I am haunted,
not by the choices I made,
but by the ones I fled from.
