TBDNBS - Keep Calling Me That

The new year is kicked off by Glasgow sound-system DJ, Keep Calling Me That. This episode focuses on the roots of Drum and Bass by exploring its reggae roots. S3E06 sees Conor from Keep Calling Me That, introduce himself to 4zzz and the Brisbane Drum and Bass Show.

After some housekeeping, Keep Calling Me That plays music from his favourite electronic reggae and dub artists including massive new releases and unreleased tracks from artists such as @DanubianDubSoundSystem, @AnDannsaDub and @Wibezz.

Drum and Bass show regular Reegze also features for a quiz style interview which devolves quickly into chatting about aussie hip-hop and of course Skrillex.

TBDNBS - S3 - E06 w/ Keep Calling Me That ft. Reegze

S3E12 sees three mixes from @keepcallingmethat which showcases their favourite bass music from artsits such as Mystic State, Teffa and Innamind Recordings.

The first mix contains some fiddle heavy dub, the second mix is tribal 140 jungle and the last mix is dubstep/ alternative bass 🎻 

I have had the absolute pleasure to invite the extremely talented Felix (aka Lara) on the show whose skill in genre switching from Breaks, Bass and Jungle is comparatively more impressive than her knowledge of Australian slang 🧐

Felix (aka Lara) started her musical journey as a singer-song writer producing Indie Summer Bangers alongside her mum in the band ‘Fond of Felix’ which is available on Spotify (I highly recommend you check them out) ;)

These days you can catch Felix spinning digital and vinyl all around the swanky clubs and pubs of Meanjin laying down funky beats for all to hear.

I was lucky enough to catch her all vinyl support set for Dr Banana at Echo and Bounce which was on par with the headliner. Look forward to a fantastic guest mix, lots of silliness, bongos and of course fingerbuns 💫

S3E18 of TBDNBS: Ahead of next weekend's DUB SBASS sees Conor from Keep Calling Me That teaming up with multi genre producer and DJ, Integer.

Ashley Hanson (Integer aka Operon), has been a mainstay figure in the drum and bass scene here in Meanjin for over 20 years. First appearing on 4zzz on Tommy Arrow's 'Drum Show', Ash shares his experiences and influences throughout his career with a particular focus on Dub and Reggae.

This show can be a teaser episode for next weekend's DubSBASS on the Hex Sound System in Yadina. A family friendly day full of roots, dub and reggae music. Where you catch both Conor and Ash playing.

SOLA UNLEASHES HIGHLY ANTICIPATED EP ON RIOT DUBS FEATURING GENERAL LEVY, SKITTLES, CONRAD SUBS, JASMINE KNIGHT & SAMMIE HALL

Riot Dubs is set to ignite the scene once again with a powerhouse release from UK bass music heavyweight Sola. Featuring an all-star lineup of vocalists and producers, this explosive EP delivers a fusion of deep basslines, razor-sharp beats, and high-energy collaborations that push the boundaries of underground music.

Sola is a Drum & Bass trio composed of James, Robbie, and Paul. They have releases on Eatbrain, Jungle Cakes, Viper, Ram, Suburban Base, Dance Concept as well as their own imprint Grand Theft Audio. Their 'Tell 'Em' EP has been several years in the making, with Sola forging and reforging the tunes that would end up on this four-track release. Across these tracks, they lay out their bold vision of drum & bass, collaborating with top-tier artists General Levy, Skittles, Conrad Subs, Jasmine Knight, and Sammie Hall. The result is an EP that refuses to stay within any paradigm, instead opting for a timeless and unique sound.

The A-side and titular track 'Tell 'Em', a collaboration with the king of Jungle MCs, General Levy, sees Levy spitting deep bars over a reggae-influenced halftime intro about making a stand in troubled times-an increasingly relevant message. There is a DJ-Friendly Intro version (also included in this mailout) without the halftime triplet drums, to make it easier to mix.

Following this, 'Owed An Apology', a collaboration with Skittles, embodies a real Manchester sound, making it the most minimal and industrial track on the EP. Skittles' powerful flow erupts over a bouncy beat and edgy basslines, while atmospheric FX keep the vibes sky high.

For any fans of modern jungle, Conrad Subs needs no introduction. A follow-up to their previous collaboration, 'Squeeze' on Nuusic, 'Smash Up' has been destroying dancefloors worldwide for years. A true crowd pleaser, the funky hip-hop intro transitions into a roof-melting bassline with hard syncopated beats, which then shifts to straight percussion sections with bouncy bass riffs, creating a captivating call-and-response pattern.

Lastly, Sola showcases their deeper side with 'Free', highlighting both their musicality and the insane vocal talent of two of the most sought-after singers in the game right now, Jasmine Knight and Sammie Hall. Deep, powerful sub-basses and robust percussion anchor the melodic content and drive the track forward. Structurally, it's unhurried, taking the listener on a meandering journey through lush soundscapes.

With deep roots in UK bass culture and a relentless drive for innovation, Sola continues to make waves, and this EP is no exception. Expect full-throttle energy, cutting-edge production, and tracks that will dominate clubs and airwaves alike.
