“Masters of slow-build indie minimal” - The Times

The Bronze Medal is the Bristol-based quintet of Chris Hillier (vocals, guitar), Robin Southwell (vocals, guitar), Mike Barnett (bass), Danny Rogers (keyboards) and Rory O'Gorman (drums). 

Beginning in 2009, the band formed during a six-week busking tour of Scandinavia taken by Chris and Robin, then former school friends studying at university looking for a lucrative means of traveling across Europe, they were soon writing the foundations for some of their first songs together. After returning home, the line-up expanded and they quickly garnered a lot of attention with their debut single 'Milk' (2010), their self titled EP (2012) as well as from their impressive live performances.

The Bronze Medal quickly made a name for themselves on the festival circuit and their early releases were enthusiastically received by critics: "A band with bold intentions, with clear and modest quality" The Fly, “Masters of the indie slow-build” The Times. Their intricate vocal harmonies, distinctive, melancholic lyrics and intense instrumentation that falls somewhere between folk and post-rock minimalism demonstrates a blend of genres that is incredibly unique and entirely their own.

In summer 2013, the band returned to the Northern European tundra to spend a month recording their debut album with acclaimed producer Valgeir Sigurðsson (Bjork, Feist, Bonnie Price Billy) at Greenhouse Studios in Iceland. Located 20 minutes outside of Reykjavik, Greenhouse Studios allowed the band room to experiment and expand on previous material without straying too far from their original sensibilities, and the Scandinavian influence has not been lost on the songs.

Switching the spotlight from swells of guitars to delicately pulsing brass and piano, their debut album takes a step back from the walls of noise that trademarked The Bronze Medal’s earlier material. The soaring crescendos and poignant silences are exchanged for a more purposeful energy built around more precise, subtle instrumentation that allows their poppy vocal melodies to cut through clearly. The Bronze Medal's highly-anticipated debut is altogether their most meticulously composed, conscientious and quietly confident effort to date; the new release will see them tour as an eight-piece band to accommodate the album's more lively, cerebral arrangements.
