This week we are happy to invite one of the most hard-working DJs in Ukraine’s electronic music scene, Nastya Muravoya made a name for herself in her hometown of Kyiv playing iconic parties such as Cxema, and overseas in other integral cities such as Berlin, and Krakow. As well as joining the line-ups for Unsound in Poland and Pohoda Festival in Slovakia last year, she’s made numerous appearances at Berghain. “Before I started playing, I just went to parties to dance. After a while I began to listen to music and in the future just look for tracks that I would dance all night long to. I found my sound very simply. If I like the track, I play it”.

New Brvtalism No. 346 - Nastya Muravyova

Louwave & Splinter (UA) [live jam] joins for DifferentSound Podcast #149.

Ukrainian electronic music artists Splinter (UA) and Louwave have joined creative forces for a live project. After several performances, the duo decided to further collaborate and are currently working on a new sound that will significantly differ from what the producers did individually. Having had over 15 years of experience in music, both artists have sought inspiration from the pioneers of the electronic music scene. They seek to add something new to sounds that have long been established. Louwave and Splinter (UA) have initially worked with each other remotely, yet after Tymur’s relocation from Odesa to Lviv, the producers began working in the studio together. Their process is an exploration and the result – a mixture of old-school vibes that ranges from classic techno to tribal groove, which in the end, is the main aspect of the duo’s live performances. When on stage, the Ukrainian artists strongly rely on the communication process between themselves and the audience, which serves as an essential tool that forms their audio narrative. For both Splinter (UA) and Louwave, music has long ceased to be a hobby. Each studio session is a balanced conceptual challenge: they know exactly what kind of sound they want to create, they search for a specific groove, bring out a certain emotion and merge it with their musical research, whilst never violating the aesthetics of genres. Their work is based on mutual respect and, when necessary, they always look for an artistic compromise.

DifferentSound invites Louwave & Splinter (UA) [live jam] / Podcast #149

The duo are among the most striking acts on Nina Kraviz's Трип label. 

The story of PTU began with experiments with second-hand synthesizers and bass guitars, driven by a burning need to make "something different." It could have ended with homemade CDs and local gigs alongside other amateur bands at local concerts in Kazan, Tatarstan, where the same musicians would often form new bands by swapping positions behind keyboards or drum machines, or maybe adding a guitarist. At one point, PTU was reconfigured to become psychodelic Acid Monkey's Temple or an electroclash band called Love-Fine or the ambient band Olympic Snow. For a couple of years, they released field recordings and ambient tracks on a DIY label called Kak?Tak ("How Come"), until most of the members grew up, moved to bigger cities and got "real jobs." 

That would have been the end of PTU, had two of its members, Alina Izolenta and Kamil Ea, not challenged themselves to grow out the bedroom mindset and get to the front of what they call "techno's stranger sector."
