To deliver verses over this super-cool, bouncy groove, I attempted to channel the Rap attitude of classic, smart-aleck MC's like 'Casual', 'Slick Rick', 'Special Ed', 'Kwame' and 'Grand Puba' who, like gentlemen, slapped competition across the face with expensive, leather, driving gloves. Disco Noir is an exploration of the world of Italo and the more experimental side of Disco. It also draws on influences from the Likes of Steely Dan, Ned Doheny and the classic production of late 70's Californian soul and pop-rock (yacht-rock!) 

We started with the idea of making shamelessly dramatic and emotional sounding songs in that style and soon realised that it was something that was surprisingly pleasing to listen to and a path towards an album then suddenly became very clear. 

We didn't want to go down the well trodden path of just purely sampling some classics from the era and flipping them into modern sounding dance music; the challenge was to play every instrument on the album between the two of us and create something totally from scratch with no sample use at all.  

While it is in parts a very sincere emotional endeavour, it definitely contains an element of tongue and cheek with some sections like the vocal hook of "let me in" purposely made purely for the laugh, which is sung by one of Holland's favourite house producers, Kid Sublime. 

Combining the sounds you'd expect from disco with elements of concentrated emotion and splatter of the sublime and the ludicrous, it's a laid back synth solo fuelled journey into the dustier parts of the archives.
