Solid Steel (7th February) In Hour 1 we welcome The Gaslamp Killer to start off the show. It's a mix of some of GLK's favourite current alternative groups specialising in the dark psychedelic side of rock and the harder edged beat music that he loves so much. Plus a couple of world psych classics in the middle, from fast to slow around we go, always a narrative journey with GLK.
DK continues with the beautiful collaboration between Debruit & Alsarah and onto the new Mount Kimbie remix for Kelis on Ninja Tune and the current single by Falty DL. Then it's a track from the Actress album Ghettoville and into the dub mix of classic 80's Boogie from Barbara Fowler, before ending with Cottam and Instra:mental from the last few years.

One of electronic music's true daddies steps up.

Heavily influenced by Aphex Twin, who went on to become his labelmate at Warp, Tom 'Squarepusher' Jenkinson had an experimental approach to bass guitar - both at school, and then later in teenage metal bands - which he applied to electronic music, releasing his debut record, Stereotype (under the name Stereotype) in 1994. After a series of records on Spymania, Jenkinson landed on Warp's roster in 1995, and became part of the label's stable of 1990s titans with Aphex, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Plaid et al.

The 20 years since have seen Squarepusher tear up the templates of jazz, drum'n'bass, psychedelia, techno and more across over 15 albums, while also developing one of the most talked-about live shows on the electronic circuit. Last year, the Squarepusher project reached a logical climax of sorts when Jenkinson released an EP, Music for Robots, that was written by him but performed by a trio of Z-Machine robots (including a 77-fingered guitarist and a 22-armed drummer). That hasn't, of course, stopped him: this month he released his latest album, Damogen Furies. 

For Squarepusher's FACT mix, he looks way back, at the rave music from the turn of the 1990s that not only inspired him, but many of his contemporaries. This is Squarepusher presents Shut Up And Dance, 1990-1992, and it's rude as fuck.

Hailing from South London, the producer and DJ has been a leading figure in electronic music since the early 2000s, who as part of the legendary DMZ crew and label, pioneered a genre rooted in sound system culture – a genre we know now as dubstep.

In 2006, Mala founded his label @deep-medi-musik as a platform for more experimental releases. It has remained a vital force in underground bass music, with a roster of artists including Kaiju, Silkie and Goth-Trad.

Twenty years since Mala first made his mark on the scene, his influence is as strong as ever. For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, the legendary producer and DJ created a mix featuring tracks from the DEEP MEDi vault, alongside some new releases. The mix is accompanied by an interview, as Mala discusses the duality of art and science in music-making, his ethos of “building” sounds, and the significance of an artist’s story in their work. Solid Steel (23rd September) In Hour 1 DJ Food graces us with the third of his Future Shock mixes, a collection of retro-futuristic sounds from the past and present that he premiered at the recent Videocrash night in London. It sees classics from Gary Numan, Mr Fingers, Grandmaster Flash, Bam Bam, S'Express and Herbie Hancock given a 21st Century update and a healthy dose of acid. Recent Solid Steel guests and Mercury Prize nominees The Comet Is Coming dual with Darth Vader's theme and Boards of Canada get a sweet vocal addition from Bomb The Bass.

Solid Steel (1st June) This week we welcome back Prefuse 73, who has his first solo album in three years 'Sacrifices', coming out on 15th June on Lex . Following a detour into fractured, kaleidoscopic hip-hop on recent releases, he has become increasingly interested in injecting a sense of space into his characteristically complex productions. The resultant 17-track collection is akin to watching an old photograph deteriorate in one’s hands, as otherwise dense beats dissipate into airy expanses of emotionally resonant electronics. His trailblazing early albums altered the course of underground music and influenced the paths of countless artists, though few could emulate his uncanny skill for evoking urgency via virtuosity. You can catch him playing at Low End Theory on 13th June and he told us;
"Not much to say about this mix other than this is a Pt.2 // follow up to the Prefuse 73_Solid Steel that was compiled in 2015. Around the 12 track mark, all of the raps lose the words and become instrumentals for all of those sick of words. Most of the material comes from cassette, I hope this can serve as an accompaniment to your Summer."
