Solid Steel Radio Show 7/2/2014 Part 3 + 4 - Tom Lea

Solid Steel (7th February) In Hour 1 we welcome The Gaslamp Killer to start off the show. It's a mix of some of GLK's favourite current alternative groups specialising in the dark psychedelic side of rock and the harder edged beat music that he loves so much. Plus a couple of world psych classics in the middle, from fast to slow around we go, always a narrative journey with GLK.
DK continues with the beautiful collaboration between Debruit & Alsarah and onto the new Mount Kimbie remix for Kelis on Ninja Tune and the current single by Falty DL. Then it's a track from the Actress album Ghettoville and into the dub mix of classic 80's Boogie from Barbara Fowler, before ending with Cottam and Instra:mental from the last few years.

We recently featured “Kylie” on Crack Tracks, which veered more towards the experimental trap side of things, but his most recent single takes his production in a completely different direction while building off the creative sound he has established.

Amidst the lush environs of his northwest roots, https://soundcloud.com/manateecommune (aka Grant Eadie) has fermented an organically molded electronic sound that has been teasing the synapses of audiophiles over the last few years. While not a stranger in the Pacific Northwest, Grant Eadie's tracks have grown tentacles that stretch deep into the dance floor, fueled by natural overtones that he extracts from field recordings. 

Following the head-turning EP 'Thistle' on Brooklyn-based label Bastard Jazz Recordings (Illa J, Lord Echo, & others) from earlier this year Grant comes to the label armed with violin arrangements, nuanced programming and pressure-sensitive LED drum breaks peppering the audio-visual experience of his participatory live performances. His debut album Manatee Commune is set for a September 16th release on Bastard Jazz, and displays the elevated confidence and deft touch of a producer truly finding his footing. Already opening for Bonobo, and recently touring with Chad Valley and Blackbird Blackbird, Manatee Commune has been featured on NPR, Stereogum, and Spin, amongst other outlets. 

Grant’s full length label debut, the self titled Manatee Commune album represents a giant leap forward in terms of sound and songwriting. The album kicks off with “What We’ve Got”, featuring Detroit rising star Flint Eastwood on vocals, showcasing Grant’s shimmering, playful production style. The song was an unlikely summer anthem, garnering over half a million spins on Spotify in the span of just a few weeks.  Further vocal tracks come from two female singers, Marina Price and Moorea Masa – who give the album a sense of cohesiveness and conjure almost a band-like feel, rather than a single producer blindly sending out beats. Lyrics, music and arrangement were at times collaborative efforts between Grant and his chanteuses,  which shines through in the cohesiveness of the vocal tracks.

Los Angeles producer Sweatson Klank returns with Then I Was Me, an EP of sentimentally-driven, sunshine-soaked hip-hop. Following releases and remixes for Alpha Pup, Warp, Ghostly, Project Mooncircle and more, Sweatson Klank - the alias of Tom Wilson - joins the Friends of Friends family, a natural home for the local veteran and his unique brand of carefully crafted hip-hop meets R&B.

Then I Was Me captures Wilson in reflective mode, distilling life experiences into music and letting emotions guide the sounds. On 'Smile', grandiose strings are contrasted against a delicate melody, layers of rhythm providing a gentle forward traction. 'Empty Your Soul' is equally restrained yet direct, dub ideas melding with a driving beat for a hypnotic ride. 'Strung Out', featuring Houston's King of Nothing and Brooklyn's Maralisa, is the EP's emotional center: a beautiful, slow and bluesy duet soaked with tension that channels the idealistic and brutal realities of relationships. Holding on to the emotional energy, ‘June 18th’ updates some classic r&b vibes with choice samples, bass-heavy rhythms and sweeping melodies. It all comes back down to earth with 'Holding Me', a throw back to Wilson's hip-hop roots with an irresistible, loose head-nod and soothing pads that wash over your soul. 


The five tracks on Then I Was Me give an insight into Sweatson Klank's next album, his fourth, which will come in early 2018 via FoF.
