The VERY FIRST house CD I ever owned. And essentially the first time I ever listened to PROPER house music. I remember thinking as a 15 year old kid 'This is a bit slow'... but after a few plays I was forever a house head. And with all time classics like MK's 'Always, 24 Hour Experience's 'Together, Happy Clappers 'I Believe', Joey Musaphia's 'Cover Ups Volume One' and the gorgeous 'Total Control ft. Caroldene Black 'You Took My Lovin' who can blame me... Maybe some of you guys remember this CD too, if so... here's to the memories.

About the CD:
So back in the day Deep Dish were one of those mythical dj partnerships we didnt get to see too much in the UK but were held up there with the likes of Danny Tenaglia and of course the UK god's that were Sasha and Digweed. Label bosses of the excellent Yoshitoshi records and regular faces on the legendary Global Ungerground cd's. Although this disc doesn't go down as an all time favourite for me it does define the late 90's and some great times clubbing which is certainly enough to get into the series.

About the CD:
My second ever house CD! I bought this one for my Christmas box through the Metro Centre in Newcastle if I remember correctly and it was the real catalyst for getting me into clubland and house music. Featuring artists that defied genres and  the underground/overground such as Leftfield, Living Joy, Wildchild and Inner City... this was music all of the UK was dancing too not just to cool kids. A pretty amazing time to be a young kid getting into music heavily... my biggest regret... not buying turntables!

About the CD:
I was always aware of Bukem, another DJ who managed to make underground rumblings to the listeners of the British dance scene without  us seemingly knowing who they even were... we just knew about them anyway.  immediately fell in love with this CD once Makoto's 'Inside Your Love' rolled in with MC Conrad's silky smooth mc'ing riding over the top. I'd always loved drum and bass from a distance, but from hearing that track... I was forever a massive fan. I bought into the Good Looking label, bought alot of old releases, all the mix cd's and then fell in love with Bukem's downtempo sister label 'Cookin Records'. This influence was one of the main sounds of my early vinyl days and has gone on to educate and delight for another decade and more. Play it loud, ride the groove, feel the bass. BUKEM!

Mark Farina is a name much loved by many yet one who rarely makes an appearance on UK turf. Arguably the king of deep jazzy house, sprinkled with that west coast sunshine vibe. He's the man behind Om Records & Mushroom Jazz, and sit's alongside Derrick Carter and DJ Sneak on the throwns of US house music. Turn it up, and enjoy the mix.

025 - No other mix CD out has made me want to wake up to it as much as this one. Think slowly rising from a dream/hangover with the best sound possible and that's about it. Both discs on Sasha & Digweed's Northern Exposure open with absolutely gorgeous tracks, Gus Gus's 'Believe' being an example of this. Furry Phreak's 'Soothe (Chicane Jazz)' dives deeper into the sound before the cd moves on to intelligent breaks, early trance and climaxes in what must be one of the most beautiful electronic tracks ever made... Hybrid's Symphony. This isn't just music you would wake up too, it's so good, you'd probably happily die to it as well. Another CD which raises the bar and takes it's own thrown on the Classic Mix CD series, and a fine choice for our quarter century episode. Turn it up... and enjoy the mix.

The second in the 'One For The Ladies' mix series. This one gets down and dirty with tracks for late night smooching supplied by artists like D'Angelo, Robert Glasper, Erykah Badu, Amp Fiddler, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Snoop Dogg, J DIlla, Vikter Duplaix, BadBadNotGood, Slum Village and Dwele.

About the CD:
So this came out of the blue in 2000 and was a new mix compilation that gained a lot of fans not just from its unique theme (what's not to like!) and retro artwork which stood out on the shelves. Not only that but the music was damn good too. Dimitri from Paris delivers a driving soulful collection which had its own unique flavour and was perfect for nights out, driving, after parties and whatever else. Shout out to Just Lance in Dubai for reminding us about this one!

So for episode 034 we had a lot of shouts after sharing the first disc on this compilation, which was the Jeremy Healy one. (Also excellent). But with so many requests it was time to get the Whitehead one up there, and after listening to again for the first time in over 10 years or so the memories of its brilliance came flooding back. It's a more soulful set with come epic vocal and feel good moments which made the mid to late 90's a much more enjoyable place to be.

So many stand out tracks but off the top of my head, Right and Exact, Tall and Handsome, Weekend, I Believe, Happiness and the highlight for me, the epic 'Sweetest Day of May' by Joe T. Vannelli Project. It's fantastically put together and a mix with truly belongs into the classic status. Whatever you're up to now Alistair... we salute you!

About the cd:
A superb surprise episode for 041 in the series. Massive thanks to Nick Sneddon for sending over some epic CDs recently. We are really happy to feature more downtempo CDs... it feels like the recovery soundtrack to countless nights clubbing and those sun kissed days that followed (well maybe not so much if you grew up in the UK).

Considering this came out in 1996, it features some simply gorgeous deep house and laid back electronic which go onto cement why DJ Harvey is a cult dj amongst fans and fellow spinners. It's a pleasure not just remember my own collection, but have other people send in theirs. And it's even better discovering that there's hundreds of other classics out there which need to be shared with everyone. Thanks again for the good vibes.

About the CD:
This out of all my mix CD's will likely bring back the most clubbing memories for the majority of my friends. It's hands down one of the greatest mix CD's of all time, a double pack of Sasha at his absolute peak, he was untouchable, worshipped like no other and unrivalled around the 1996-2000 era in the majority of opinions. It defined a period of clubbing that had 50 Sunderland dance heads on a bus filling up half of the main room at Sasha's, Craig Richard's and Lee Burridge's 'Tyrant' night, at the Bomb in Nottingham. Which still holds strong as the best clubbing experience for most of us. It was legendary times, and this is a legendary mix CD.

Uploading some old mixes in light of the new, relaxed rules for DJ mixes on SoundCloud... if it's true... shout out to SoundCloud!

This mix was originally done in 2006 for a bit of fun just before Valentines Day. Something to get the lovers in the mood with smooth sounds and (mostly) female vocals throughout. It was supposedly played by a Leeds radio station thanks to my mate Allie, and was one of my most popular mixes before it eventually got took down. For the third instalment of the new _SESSIONS series we invited old friend Eddie Leader from Hudd Traxx for what is a mix of the highest house calibre. We originally met in the early 2000s in our student years, djing at our local party and since then Eddie has gone on to run a successful label, Hudd Traxx for over 12 years now and dj all around the world.

The label has received worldwide support from DJ's like Luciano, Loco Dice, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Josh Wink & more. Hudd Traxx music has been licensed to various compilations including Ministry Of Sound, Fabric & OM. If that's not house music royalty we don't know what is.

SESSIONS_04 comes from friend of the show, Antony Daly aka 586 of the most excellent 586 Records in Newcastle, England. We've actually had this on the iPod for years but Tony has very kindly offered it up again for a re-airing. It really it quite seminal stuff. Be sure to call into 586 Records when you're in town and here's a few words from the man himself...

'Recorded, late into the Night, January 2003. A live, one hit mix via Suade's Studio in Sandyford, Newcastle upon Tyne. A personal soundtrack to a difficult time in my life. Poor health and unrequited love. Hopefully, the lyrics in these great songs and the overall mood of the mix, reflect that. Enjoy and thanks for listening'.

For the 5th instalment, we hooked up with Dubai's number one hat wearing, vinyl addict... Shadi Megallaa. He's got links to some of the city's finest musical happenings, such as the immensely good Analog Room (which is nothing short of a Dubai institution) and also runs the Ark to Ashes label. This mix called... 'Less is More' is over 15 years old, yet remains one of his favourite personal selections. We agree, it's exceptional. Many thanks fella!

Some words from Shadi:
'Less is More is my 2nd proper mix from back in the early 2000s. The 1st one being a mix called Impulse. It was recorded on a Philips CDR 775 Recorder. Back in those days there were no daws or digital recording. The mix was recorded in real time on a cd. One mistake & you had to throw away the cd and start all over.  I guess you can feel that tension in the mix & hence why it still sounds good almost 15 years later. Hope you enjoy it.'

About the CD:
001 of the Classic Mix CD collection. This mix immediately sprung to mind and an major contender for all time favourite mix CD. (It's seems like a few of you guys think the same). A hands in the air, feel good garage (and house) banger with many many memories attached. I think I bought this in 1997, two years after leaving school, going to college, working at McDonalds's and clubbing up and down the country once a month alongside weekly/daily night outs in Sunderland. About the CD:
002 of the Classic Mix CD Series and yet another absolute stand out classic. After getting into house at around 15, I guess my only source of info was Danny Rampling's seminal LGDP (Love Groove Dance Party) Saturday nights on Radio 1. However I can't remember Carter getting much coverage on there, yet he, much like Danny Tenaglia seemed to have a level of legend unlike most. This CD cemented my love of house music with an all might smash in the face. The tempo, the bass, the disco, the filters, and fucked up vocals... this was heavyweight. Nothing could compete at the time. I'll always remember driving to college with my 2 nerdy class mates and insisting they played this CD in the car. I'm raving in the back and they are like "What the fuck is this shit, turn it down!". It's with immense pleasure that DJ's like Sneak and Carter seem to be booking all the massive clubs and parties again. I'm not so keen on the whole 'I'm a House Gangster' vibe... but this is as bad as it gets.

About the CD:
005 of the 'Classic Mix CD' collection brings a much slower affair. From the superb 'Back To Mine' CD series. The first I purchased was actually Danny Tenaglia's disc, which I bought out of curiosity being a fan of his house DJ sets. That disc almost made it here, but it was the Groove Armada release which really got hammered on my old Sony stereo. No other disc reminds me of lazy summer sundays more than this. And it was really the first musical selection that steered me towards collecting and playing a mix of music all together. Going from A Tribe Called Quest, into Barry White's incredible "Playing Your Game Baby" then house and other genre's coming in.... really resonated with me and elevated the way I put music together. Both listening to and playing out. A truly seminal release.

About the CD:
This out of all my mix CD's will likely bring back the most clubbing memories for the majority of my friends. It's hands down one of the greatest mix CD's of all time, a double pack of Sasha at his absolute peak, he was untouchable, worshipped like no other and unrivalled around the 1996-2000 era in the majority of opinions.  It defined a period of clubbing that had 50 Sunderland dance heads on a bus filling up half of the main room at Sasha's, Craig Richard's and Lee Burridge's 'Tyrant' night, at the Bomb in Nottingham. Which still holds strong as the best clubbing experience for most of us. It was legendary times, and this is a legendary mix CD.

In this 75 minute selection, Mode 7 (aka The Classic Mix CD Series founder Gareth) reminisces of dark, dubby, back room atmospheres. Where all the heads are. A wave takes over you, a feeling of looking down to the floor. Then lifting back up, full of energy, life, surrounded by like minded souls. Hands in the air and one of the best nights of your life. Night Works 2 - Mixed by Mode 7 (2021)

Hey, Gareth here, I'm a graphic designer who start designing for clubs, parties, and labels in the late 90s. Back then, mix CDs were the holy grail of both design and music. I loved them.

But I wasn't the only one, mix cds were the soundtracks of our nights, our days, our afterparties and lives, for everyone. Yet in today's internet age, the art form has been lost (or just changed) to 2-3 hour online mixes and streaming videos, which just don't create the same magic your CD collection did. Just 60 minutes of music and incredible artwork.

The Classic Mix CD Series celebrates these discs, their soundtrack, their box art and your memories. We hope you enjoy it.
