Our inherited repertoire of folk songs -- from colonial-era broadside ballads to the 20th century contributions of Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and their many followers -- is full of lyrics attached to pre-composed popular melodies. Even the melody of our national anthem had a prior existence as a British tavern song.

It is in that spirit that Michael Winograd (the contemporary Klezmer master) and I have penned new words for a well-known melody by the film composer John Williams.

The List

Daniel Fishkin, Cleek Schrey, and Ron Shalom comprise the world's only daxophone consort. The daxophone, invented by German font designer Hans Reichel, is a thin, bowed wooden strip, with a sound ranging from furtive gurgles and delicate whistles to wild screams. 

Drawing on backgrounds in instrument building, theater, costume, and traditional music, the trio realizes historical experimental music and creates out of a shared improvisational grammar. Past collaborators have included Ellen Fullman, music theorist Mack Hagood, and the LeStrange Viols.

In 2016 they participated in Fishkin’s ambitious series of concerts in Philadelphia, supported by The Pew Center, which posed the question “What is Tinnitus Music?”
