Carl Jean-Louis, better known as Dextah, is a Chicago native currently residing in Northern California’s Bay Area. His releases throughout the years have displayed his love for hard drums and contemporary Hip Hop. Originally released by the seminal New York label and Blog Grandgood (Dj Signify, Grandmaster Caz, etc) “Relentless Disillusion” is Dextah’s first official full length and is evocative of a David Lynch soundtrack. 

Straight out of the artist's archives, “Relentless Disillusion Redux” includes limited copies of the original vinyl pressing, DVD, plus a download code (200pcs worldwide). As an added feature the never before released digital format includes 2 haunting bonus tracks, "All I Have Is Salvation" and "Lovers Spat" .

The project was mastered by Canadian beat-smith Sixtoo (Ninjatune). The vinyl version features a Bonus DVD by System D128 who is best known for his work with The Wu Tang Clan, Bigg Jus, Diplo, Blockhead, Madvillain and Daft Punk.

Gathered Between is Dday One’s fifth studio album in ten years, a lost chapter from his discography unearthed through an exercise in memory. 

The tracks on Gathered Between were originally recorded after Dday One’s second album, Heavy Migration. But a hard drive failure took the album away, leaving only a handful of tracks that were released on rare and now out-of-print compilations. In early 2015, while listening to a rough demo of the album, Dday decided to reconstruct Gathered Between using memory as his only guide. 

Dday dug through his crates to relocated samples and, using classic samplers and various other technology, reprogrammed the album beat by beat like an audio archaeologist. As a result, Gathered Between expands the language of classic hip-hop production in the same spirit as the greats of the genre. 

Gathered Between offers a captivating instrumental hip-hop journey across ten tracks. As with previous releases, the crackle of vinyl sits next to melancholic horn melodies and piano licks, fingered bass dances across breaks, and disembodied voices give the slightest hint of the author’s opinions. Built from hundreds of samples, the music is a tapestry of pasts on which the listener is invited to write their own memories and hopes for the future. Starting off with a bang, ‘One Another’, a tune of unification, brings to mind hints of classic Pete Rock production, the crunchy drums and bubbling stabs of ‘Alchemy Loop’ are reminiscent of golden era aesthetics but move beyond. The album is held together by the same attention to detail and intricate sample layering that has defined Dday One’s work to date. 

Gathered Between was mastered by Finland’s Janne “Fanu” Hatula, a diverse producer and engineer who has worked with Bill Laswell, Damu The Fudgemunk, and Klute among others. The album’s cover features a photograph entitled ‘Between Worlds’ photographed by Melbourne’s Andrew Parmi. Displaying a bird flying between an older and modern build, it was chosen by Dday One to symbolize the combination of nature and architecture and to represent the album’s transitional nature, then lost and now found.

Dday One 'Dying Heart' on BBC Radio 6 With Philip Selway (The Content Label)

The Content Label, Los Angeles’s ‘experiential’ hip hop imprint, rarely signs an artist based on a demo, but an impressive delivery from Japan recently broke the trend. Recorded by Salty – AKA Tokyo-based producer / videographer Naoya Ninomiya – the demo arrived as a nearly complete object, ready for dissemination to the global hip-hop headz-space. The songs have been mastered by legendary Japanese hip-hop studio engineer ‘The Anticipation Illicit’ Tsuboi and, with Dday One acting as executive producer it is now ready to be unveiled as the thirteen track album Camera. It’s a fantastic audio journey that gives a glimpse into Japanese beat-making prowess while sitting proudly within the instrumental hip hop echelon.

With Camera, Salty showcases a diverse set of styles and an acumen for rhythmic patterns and tone, developed through his years of crate-digging and experimentation. And there are many moments to claim as highlights … “Remonoganac” with its gentle piano, atmospheric textures, and tough beats; the laid-back hip hop funk and scratches of “ADSL”; the smoky downtempo vibe of “The Sea Came At Midnight” is reminiscent of sounds of classic Dj Krush; and “Melting In The Dark” with its cinematic layers and haunting vocal. These all qualify for honors, among other possible choices. With Camera, a compelling portrait of Salty as a rising star on the beat-making scene has emerged and The Content Label is on the case.

The Content Label presents a dynamic new split EP from Lex (de Kalhex) and Dday One, titled "Parallel Presence". The EP's title reveals some clues: 'parallel' refers to something similar to another, while 'presence' imagines a thing that exists but is not seen. These two producers, as kindred spirits, strive to work on this deeper level. Parallel Presence is an expressive step forward, presenting intricate beats, thoughtful samples, and otherworldly vibes colluding towards a mesmerizing whole. 

Los Angeles based producer Dday One bookends the EP with "Key Signature" and "Moving Force", displaying his undisputed acumen for rhythm construction and skillful arrangement. The opening track, in particular, is a beat-head's manna, featuring a serpentine bass line, staccato vocals, and heavy piano riffs, all synchronized at a headnodic tempo. Alex Besikian aka Lex (de Kalhex) is a visual artist, producer, and MC, known as the co-founder of Paris's Akromégalie Records and 1/3 of seminal French hip hop group Kalhex. His cuts "Brilliant Circles" – with its night owl drum beat, tinkling electric keys, and gentle horn line – and "Solstice" – featuring ringing tones, bluesy guitar riffs, velvet saxophone, and some serious rhythm play – uncannily compliment Dday One's contributions, cementing "Parallel Presence" as an EP best ingested from front to back. 

Visual and audio art also come together in the project's cover design, which was a collaborative effort of the two producers. The Content Label aims to bring together distinct forms of expression, with sound, thought, and visual art combining through the imprint's releases. "Parallel Presence" is just the latest evidence.

Dday One’s Journal project originated as a limited self released CD-R sold exclusively at his live shows. The project consisted of four fully sample-based compositions created solely with a hardware sampler and a turntable. Soon after its release and due to broader demand The Content Label reissued the Journal EP in digital and CD format. Now Dday One revisits the project with a ten track extended version entitled Journal | Extended. The release features remastered versions of the original four tracks accompanied by six previously unreleased cuts.

The tracks on Journal | Extended date from the same period, as the prolific Dday One was realizing a spectrum of sample-based experiments. Influenced by personal entries from Dday One’s studio journals (one of which is pictured in the cover art), the music shows the producer constructing new sonic possibilities within his unique style. Flipped beats and layered samples abound, placed in compelling arrangements that affirm Dday One’s pensive attention to detail. Tracks like “Heiwa”, evoking the melancholia of a traveller’s search for inner truth, “Meaning”, characterized by otherworldly tones and textures, and “Rhythm Section”, with its playful introduction to the cut’s instrumentation elements, are just a few highlights of this skillful selection.

Within the mind of Glen Porter exists Mr. Vampire and The Deadly Walkers. Glen's latest album on The Content Label tells the sprawling, heartfelt tale of Mr. Vampire as he traverses the lonely desert with his Deadly Walkers. There's a hint of lost love, and the melancholy feeling of a distant home and a far-off destination. Glen Porter realizes these memory movies with a stunning mixture of swirling psychedelia, springy electronic rhythms, and charred western guitar riffs. Recorded over the last few years in Huntington Beach, California, Mr. Vampire and The Deadly Walkers also reveals a strong visual element courtesy of collaborator Lucien Shapiro who designed the masks worn by the cryptic inhabitants of the album cover. As with previous releases, Glen Porter plays most of the instruments and this time he's lending his husky voice as well. Other guests on Mr. Vampire and The Deadly Walkers include Chris Alfaro AKA Free The Robots (Alpha Pup Records) Warren Thomas (The Abigail's) and Jessie Jones (Burger Records). 

The uniqueness of this project is embodied in the track "Pale Rider", featuring horse-gallop percussion, the thickest strings of a twangy guitar, and the vocal interplay of Warren Thomas and Jessie Jones. The rough starkness and lost-in-time atmosphere correlate subtly with the project's cover art. "Dark Place" introduces some meaty drum programming that's solidly in The Content Label's purview, but merges the beats with a frantic and moody guitar workout. There's also the duo of "Mr. Vampire" and "Mrs. Vampire" (the latter featuring the contribution of Free The Robots) which add a bass guitar led post-punk feel to the album's sonic quiver. These are just a few highlights among an inventive ten tracks. The tunes convey expansive landscapes, ruined and desolate, battered by sand storms and entropy. Mr. Vampire wanders this land with his Deadly Walkers, and Glen Porter's soundtrack gives vibrant life to their passage.
