A sweeping, sad, orchestral strings sound.

This was a MIDI improvised at the keyboard with a synth pad voice to give my fingers the right touch for strings. Should have played right into the daw with a MIDI cord because there was lots of distortion translating the MIDI to the daw voice. I used the All Strings orchestral voice in Music Maker's virtual synthesizer - compression and wider stereo helped, then I lowered some of the overbearing bass and brought up the mid-range.

The Assignment: Finish something (musical) you started last year.

I remember when I started this one year ago I was sitting in a train and in love with Abletons "Operator" FM synth and a mutating sequence on loop. There was no bass at all, because I had bad simple earphones and in the train I was only able to hear the high bells.

Honestly, everytime I listened to it, I thought "This is enough, you don't need more, I like it how it is.", but at the same time I felt guilty, because it was very simple. That's why I never finished it.

To finish the track, I quickly added a bassdrumish sound with Puremagnetik Foomph and added some droney pads. Now I feel guilty again, really like a cheater, because it is still very simple, but now it's finished and I like it.

This weeks prompt immediately gave me the idea of combining an inherently natural reverb sound with a guaranteed unnatural, reverb-free sound. 

The natural reverberated sound comes from two layers of a field recording of a church in Vienna, recorded in October, which provides ambient noises. The naturally guaranteed reverb-free sound consists of several layers of yesterday's WebSDR recordings, which provided rhythmic and melodic components.

The reverb-free sounds here start with a lot of synthetic reverb and end as they are in reality. The church was stripped of reverb from the beginning with two layers of RX10 de-reverb, which is gradually reduced until the natural reverb of the church dominates. Mono/stereo and panning followed these ideas. So at the end of the track there is a naturally reverberant church and the WebSDR noise, which comes naturally without reverb.

I particularly liked this contrast because reverb indicates spaces; a church is more than a space, as a sacred space it has its own spatiality, so to speak, in Karl Popper's World 3, which contains ideas as much as art. The WebSDR signals seem spaceless, and yet they fill the expanding sphere of their propagation – and the signals itself may transport meaning and ideas from a World-3-Level.

Yes, perhaps a little bit over the top, but that's what I liked.

Radiohead - Pyramid song  (Rare version)

As a little surprise, a cover I made from one of my childhood favorite songs. 

In an interview, Darren Hayes who was lead singer of the band said he recorded his voice 6 times and 6 backing singers for the chorus, making 12 voices in total. I tried to reproduce something similar though not exactly the same. Definitely my favourite pop song from the 90s.

Though Savage Garden released only two albums, both were great. The eponymous album is my favourite pop album from the 90s along with Depeche Mode's "Violator". I also wish to cover "To the Moon and Back" someday.

I also think Darren Hayes solo albums are really good. And I especially love the live DVD "A Big Night In" from 2006.

Darren, Daniel, if you ever hear my cover version, I hope you guys will like it :)
