from the ruby red sun that hangs over the scene

Sean Christopher has been immersed in music all his life. As a child growing up in the Netherlands he would listen to his father play Flamenco guitar for hours and hours every day, while his mother’s extensive vinyl collection introduced him to legendary artists like The Beatles, Leonard Cohen, and David Bowie.
 
An alumni of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and Codarts in Rotterdam, where he studied music production, Sean began creating music for films and commercials shortly after graduating. In 2014 his song ‘Everything’, composed and produced for an international car commercial, began to get him noticed, reaching a million streams on Spotify.
 
Back in The Hague, Sean built himself a basement studio and decided to record his first full-length album. Hidden away, accompanied only by his ever-growing collection of instruments and his dog Ollie, he began to work. In the end, it was his father's old Flamenco guitar that took centre stage and drove the recording of what was to become ‘Yonder’.
 
After relocating to Bristol last year, Sean signed a record deal with Swedish label Dumont Dumont, home to artists including RY X, Charlie Cunningham and Josin.

THE SONG:
Unknowingly when he started writing it, Bora York songwriter and producer Chris Bartels happened to be foreshadowing his own creative and emotional state with new single “I Finally Let My Heart Grow Again.”

With three children under the age of 6, and several other projects and commitments underway, Chris and Rebekah Bartels are hardly in a season of life with the luxury of time to be creative on a third Bora York album. In a seemingly endless creative funk, Bora York just wasn’t fun anymore for Chris.

Still, and always, a work in progress, there was a turning point a few months ago, when he stepped back and made a choice to worry less and focus less on the end results of things, and what Bora York “should look like.” Instead, trying to simply live in the moment of writing these songs, and go back to what birthed Bora York in the first place - having fun.

That feeling of brokenness, perhaps, is embodied in the experimental sounds of the track - glitched out synth beds, never fully in tune with each other, eerie and cinematic vocal samples, a dissonant main progression, and painfully sincere vocals.

“I’m a mess, it’s clear as day; but for some reason you stuck with me anyway.”

For awhile, Chris was wondering if Bora York had actually run its course, if it was time to move on. He was a mess. But he stuck with it anyway. 

And just maybe, when we’re in a painful time like this, if we let our heart grow again, little by little, there’s a new season on the other side.

THE ALBUM:
The four and half years of writing the album Emotion Vertigo were far from a smooth process for us. I was in a seemingly endless creative funk, and considered the idea of calling it quits on the project entirely. There was a turning point when I stepped back and realized I had let worries and insecurities of what Bora York “should or shouldn’t look like” take priority.

This process of ups and downs led to the creation of a collection of songs spanning an entire spectrum of emotion, thus giving the album title, Emotion Vertigo, its place. It was a passionate step back to what it’s all about - the music.
