Week 33 House

Hello Beautiful Souls,

Here's my last set I've created for THIS IS HOUSE: LIVE 
Shot at Parc de Dieppe at -40 degrees so it was quite a challenge!

For this Set I was inspired by a more melodic arrangement with a tribal flavor. An amalgam of percussions dark vocals and broken synthesizer which reflects my taste for complicated mashup.

I want to say a special thank you to all the production team for having set up this crazy projet.

Dive into a blend of classy tech house, creative techno, and afro house with Chorniy, also known as the Director of Bonfires and Picniqs @ Brigada, experience the beats that ignite Toronto's underground party scene.

His journey into the world of entertainment began as a club promoter in Toronto's bustling entertainment district, specifically on the iconic Richmond St.

It wasn’t long before he found himself deeply immersed in the after-hour club scene, where the music was not only better but transformative. He cultivated an ability to distinguish and dissect various sounds, which he could then replicate on multiple instruments, including the piano, drums, bass, guitar, and the Sopilka, a traditional Ukrainian woodwind instrument. This was his Eureka moment – he discovered that he could create music too!

His mother recalls him, at three years old, listening to her play the piano and saying, "Mom, can't you hear that's an A and not B flat?" This natural ability helped shape his musical journey.

Around 2010, he started experimenting with Ableton. This tinkering led to a few notable releases and ultimately the formation of the renowned duo Rafwat & Chorniy. Their partnership yielded incredible success and memorable experiences.

During this period, he began inviting some of their current Brigada boys to his annual birthday rituals. These gatherings took place in a variety of unique locations such as parks, beaches, and other discrete spots around the city. Brigada quickly became known for throwing the best off-the-grid parties in Toronto. These events were mostly invite-only, with locations announced at the last minute. They built a community of dedicated followers who valued the great vibes, music, people, and bonfires. In 2020, they hosted the only party of the year in a ravine near his house, which was praised for its positive impact on mental health. One attendee remarked, "I could tear up that the city still has a pulse."

This is how Brigada Bonfire came into existence!

The year 2023 was marked with a significant spiritual awakening. He managed to release 30 years of pent-up anger and frustration caused by traumatic experiences with Soviet-era music teachers who were physically and emotionally abusive, punishing students for singing off-key. This realization shed light on why he had never fully and wholeheartedly pursued a music career. Now, with this newfound clarity and freedom, his creativity is flowing like never before, and he is incredibly excited about what the future holds.

He describes his current style as a fusion of classy tech house, creative techno, and a splash of Afro house for flow, reflecting a journey of healing and musical exploration.

These last few months, I've spent a fair amount of time musing over my own artistic identity and my place within the bigger space. 

What does it meant to be a "deep house DJ"..."progressive DJ"..."tech-house DJ"..."Burner DJ" [cringe]...and so on?
Does it even matter? Artistically, no, not in the slightest.

But practically, I've come to believe that it does, evidenced by the constrained expectations and sometimes bemusement of promoters who book me.

Unfortunately, being perceived and labeled on a singular dimension isn't such a great thing.
But the good news is that the solution is to just keep doing what I love to do: releasing mixes that weave in and out of moods and feelings, taking you to a destination hopefully different than where you started.

Es gibt moderne urbane Mythen, welche die Zeit überdauern und als unausgesprochene Wahrheiten gelten. Nirgends niedergeschrieben werden sie von Mund zu Ohr weitergegeben und existieren nur in den Köpfen der Menschen. Sie halten sich hartnäckig und gehören zur jeweiligen Kultur dazu.
Ein solch urbaner Mythos aus den 90ern ist zum Beispiel das Wunderheilmittel vieler Konsolen Fans „das Pusten“. Hat ein Gameboy-Spiel nicht funktioniert, einfach das Spiel wieder rausziehen, kurz über die Kontakte pusten und schon war die Welt wieder in Ordnung. Dabei würde es schon reichen, das Spiel einfach nochmal in die Konsole zu stecken. Das Pusten bewirkt auf lange Sicht eher das Gegenteil und zerstört das Spiel sogar. Die Legende lebt jedoch immer noch.
Auch in der Electro-Szene gibt es solche Geschichten, die die Fantasie der Menschen beflügelt. So gelten die Partys der späten 70er im Warehouse Chicago als die Mutter aller House Partys. Animalische Szenen solch sich dort abgespielt haben, während Frankie Knuckles seine Marathon-Sets auf die Menge niederprasseln ließ. Pure Ekstase durchzuckte die Körper der Anwesenden und die Menge bestand nicht mehr aus Individuen, sondern war ein großes energiegefülltes Wesen, welches ein unkontrollierbares Eigeneleben entwickelt hatte. Es entstand eine Bewegung, der jeder angehören konnte und die in späteren Tracks als „Jack“ bezeichnet wurde. Die urbane Legende von Jack wird auch heute immer wieder in Tracks und Mixtapes verwendet. Natürlich ist das nur eine von vielen Mythen die sich in der elektronischen Tanzmusik entwickelt haben. 
Vielleicht schaffen wir es mit der deep story von Aio eine neue urbane Legende zu begründen, die die Menschen wieder zusammenführt und in Ekstase verschmelzen lässt. Ein Mixtape das die Fantasie der Menschen beflügelt und über das sich in Zukunft viele Mythen ranken werden.
