Every so often the universe delivers one of those special parties, the ones that stick with you and send shivers down your spine bassline. A few months ago in a brief recess between interstate lockdowns, we had the absolute pleasure of playing the closing set at the Bridge courtyard for our friends at Lovejoy. We woke up at 6am, had a 7/11 coffee and a tequila and headed straight into the rave for a 9am set time(!!!). The pure rapture that ensued thereafter was captured via this recording. We originally weren't going to share it, but as we and our Sydney dance community family are both currently locked down, we thought it would be nice to relive the moment together, from our lounge rooms to yours.

Fino ad arrivare a primavera inoltrata del 1991, eravamo nel nuovo Peter Pan, l’inizio dell’epoca di “segui la penna” il grande Giorgio de Mitri aveva appena disegnato il nuovo logo del Peter Pan fortemente voluto dal titolare di allora Gianni Nisticò e fu programmato un lancio con molte serate dove il logo (la Penna) cambiava colore e prendeva il colore della bandiera dei djs ospiti in quella serata.
La prima sera fu proprio dedicata ai djs inglesi sempre con l’aiuto di Maurizio Clemente che nel frattempo aveva aperto a Londra proprio un’agenzia di djs assieme all’amico Kid Batchelor con il nome di Caus’n Effect.
Non riuscimmo a portare per problemi di budget: Danny Rampling e Steve Proctor perché oramai erano diventati troppo famosi e furono sostituiti dagli allora quasi sconosciuti Terry Farley, Fabi Paras ed altri però riuscimmo a portare Andy Weatherall
La serata fu stupenda carichissima chi c’era lo può confermare e dalla consolle fu curioso vedere questi artisti, poi diventati delle icone mondiali, tremare per mettere i dichi perché non erano abituati ai grandi locali, mi dicevano che erano abituati a clubs underground di massimo 300 persone con poche luci.
Andy il dj più esperto del gruppo metteva i dischi usando degli inizi con effetti in modo da non commettere errori di mixaggio in battuta e trasmise un’energia spaziale, alla fine della sua performance mi regalò una parte dei dischi che aveva messo, dischi che non ho mai suonato a causa della mia cocciutaggine integralista musicale perché li consideravo troppo commerciali, ma li conservo ancora come delle reliquie nelle loro buste di plastica trasparenti con i numeri che Andy ci aveva appiccicato, con grande affetto.
Andy mi piaceva moltissimo come persona era umano ed era un dj sopra le righe con un suo stile inconfondibile e con il tempo è riuscito ad emergere dalla massa degli altri djs e ci è rimasto fino alla fine come pochi altri.
In questi giorni a causa della sua prematura scomparsa tanti parlano di lui e lo elogiano, ma a me farebbe piacere che di queste persone se ne parlasse sempre anche quando sono in vita in modo che possano portare un giusto esempio a chi vuole fare questo percorso in questo mondo musicale meraviglioso che oggi forse non lo è più tanto.

Electro. It’s a genre that has been resolute and unflinching in its purpose and design. It’s changed little from its origins when Kraftwerk laid down the foundations for what would fork off into Techno and Hip Hop in future iterations. At its core it’s machine music with Sci-Fi connotations and soulful grooves. 

It has inspired dedicated scenes from Detroit to London which exist around the genre, and in Oslo it’s garnered a devoted fan-base like none other, with many individuals making and playing this style of music, even if in solitary contexts. Digitizer is one of these individuals.

The Electro artist has been on the periphery of Oslo’s DIY scene since the early 2000’s. At first assuming the name Polymorph, he eventually adopted the moniker Digitizer. Jis output as recording artist has been reserved, but as a live performer he’s been a presence all over Oslo’s clubbing scene. He can often be found playing at concepts like Robomatic’s Elektro Romantikk, and it was that concept and the DJ that facilitated Digitizer’s live performance for this edition of the jaeger mix. 

Armed with little more than three machines – modern versions of classic synths and drum machines – Digitizer performed from our sauna. Featuring some tracks from his latest release, “Future Technologies” alongside mostly unreleased material, Digitizer programmed a set that pays homage to the origins for Electro. 

Hints of Drexciya and Kraftwerk echo through Digitizer’s sound, but it’s a sound based very much on the power of song rather than tracks. Sparkling melodies flicker between skipping beats and snarling motifs from a 303 acid machine. It’s Electro in its purest form.

Some say that Alfredo is the most influential dj of all? We'll leave you to decide that. 

Born in Argentina, Alfredo was raised with the sunshine in his bones. At the age of 23 he moved to Spain and later found himself at home on the island of Ibiza. A legend was born. Having been described as the man who influenced the likes of DJ Harvey, Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling his reputation is notorious. During the 1980's he was the artistic mastermind behind the much loved Amnesia club and helped to formulate the path forwards for the white isle. To this day he remains focused on delivering music in a way which only he knows how. This is dance music with a sun kissed twist, acid with a balearic sensibility, only the real survive.

In the early nineties after Acid House was firmly instated as part of popular culture and shortly after his success with Primal Scream on the 1991 record Screamadelica, Andrew Weatherall could have easily taken a position amongst the Oakenfolds and Sashas of the world as a superstar DJ, but feigned the spotlight in favour of something more substantial.
“It’s a lot of work, once you go up that slippery showbiz pole”, he told The Independent in a 2016 interview with Fiona Sturges. “(I)t would keep me away from what I like which is making things. I mean, I had a little look in the early Nineties. I stood at the bottom of that pole and looked up and thought to myself ‘The view’s pretty good. But it’s very greasy and there are a lot of bottoms up there that I might have to brush my lips against. So, maybe I’ll give it a miss’.”

Weatherall grew up in the suburbs on the outer fringes of London, and he would spend his weekends going on “raiding parties” in the city. Trips like these would usually involve some “skirmishes” he told Bill Brewster in The Record Players, but ultimately they would involve buying records. In Beaufort Market in the Kings Road, the same road which Sex Pistols came to the fore and Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren owned and ran the Sex Shop, Weatherall bought post punk records from a place called the Cage. In the week Weatherall would be engaged in all manner of jobs just to make enough money for a weekend jaunt into the city. By the age of 13 he had become known as the “bloke with the weird records” and as he came of age he would start being asked to “come play some music”, stepping into the role of DJ as that role became more defined through the 1980’s.

“I want to listen to something in slightly open-mouthed wonder, doesn’t matter whether it’s a rockabilly track or techno. I got hooked in the idea that everything has to be new and original for a while. Originality is not what’s important, it’s authenticity.”
He knows his audience, and at Jæger his set favoured a 4/4 proclivity, but it combined guitars, synthesis and melodic vocal hooks in ways that you don’t often hear on the dance floor. His tracks come from vastly different sonic spheres but in the context of the mix they all find a disjointed relationship with each other bolstered by the unique artistic identity behind it.   
“Even if you’re playing wildly different music, I try to make some sort of connection or some sort of flow”, Weatherall told Bill Brewster when the latter asked what makes a good DJ.
