Thumpa - The Jump Up Chronicles Vol 2 (1997 - 1999)

Wow what a difference a year or 2 makes! In 1999 dancefloor drum & bass transitioned from bouncy feel good tunes to moody, teeth gritting stinkers. Jump up took a back seat to the new sound championed by Bad Company, Ed Rush & Optical and more...but there were still some names pushing the wobbly sound. Twisted Individual carried on his trademark sound along with new boys Hazard, Zen and more, here in the midlands JB & Spice were releasing quality music on their Back 2 Basics label.

I had my first proper club gig in 2000 playing a lot of these records, these records are not in great condition so there's a couple of skips and rough sounding mixes, apologies but these records have been battered!

By 2002 the jump up scene was absolutely kicking again after a quiet year or 2, Hazard was coming through the ranks as a serious producer, supported by Hype, Andy C & more. Generation Dub and Taxman were making waves with releases on Formation and Propaganda and the king Twisted Individual dropped 'Bandwagon Blues' after hearing 'T-10' by Distorted Minds. In Bristol a producer called Clipz was getting rewinds from Grooverider. Wobbly jump up was here to stay...

"If someone told me 10 years ago that an LGBTQ dnb night was in the works, I wouldn't have believed it!

As a gay man who's spent a considerable amount of time within the drum and bass scene as a producer, dj and vocalist, I've found that my experience of drum and bass culture has dramatically changed over the years - For the better of course!!

When I was younger, and for most of my youth, I felt like an outsider within the dnb community and struggled to find where I fit into the dnb scene. On one side of my life was Gay culture and on the other, Drum and Bass. Culturally and musically they didn't seem to draw the same type of people. 

I was fortunate to have supportive friends, producers, djs, and older queens around me to see me through my journey. 
But now that I've blossomed into beardom (lol) as well as adulthood, I've grown comfortably into my own skin, not only as an artist, but also as a human being. 

In the past, I would go to dnb nights, then immediately rush to the gay bars and clubs to socialise and enjoy the other side of life. Sometimes, going back and forth several times in one night. In the gay bar, I felt as though I belonged on a personal level, I was able to speak openly, watch incredible stage performances and ultimately be understood. On the dnb side, I was there for the music and the dancefloor. 

Back to now:

It's SO very refreshing to have LGBTQ and (much more) female representation in the scene now. It's made a world of difference as well as creating new waves of musical influence. Truly feel proud of DNB for moving in this direction, and to be honest, I had always hoped for something like Unorthodox, but never would have thought it possible. So glad we're here for it!! Unorthodox is everything I love about LGBTQ culture and DNB culture in the same space. Absolutely here for it."

"It’s something that I haven’t thought about much myself as I have never really worried about what other people are doing and to have a problem with anybody and how or who they choose to spend intimate time is nothing short of sad. From the early days of rave the crowd was more inclusive to LGBTQ+ in the late 80s but when hardcore was born, the scene split. Unorthodox has brought that back and I personally think it’s amazing."

Hailing from Moss Side, Manchester, his surroundings growing up in a Windrush hub ensured that his path led only one way. 

From attending free parties in his younger years to celebrating three years of running his successful multi-genre label, Spynal Records, Dili has come a long way on his journey. His mix is also a journey that covers all ends of the drum & bass spectrum.

After 18 months I finally got round to mixing volume 5 of my Jump Up Chronicles mix, covering the amazing 2005 - 2006 era! 

By 2005 Hazard had cemented himself as the hottest D&B producer around and artists like Clipz, TC, Simon Bassline Smith & Drumsound and many more were firing out jump up material played by everyone from Pendulum to Bryan Gee to Andy C to Nicky Blackmarket to Bailey. Much to the disgust of the purists, jump up was going nowhere.

Diving straight into one of my favourite eras, the 2007/8 period! By this time jump up was everywhere, Taxman and Original Sin were firing out anthems monthly, Hazard released the HUGE Machete Bass EP, TC's 'Evolution' became the album of the year and Modified Motion, Connecta and Heist were dropping high pitched bassline wobblers all over the gaff. Love it or hate it...this is jump up baby!
