Amsterdam-based artists Cubicolor debut their very first album 'Brainsugar' on Anjunadeep, September 16th. The LP, which features the likes of 'Falling', 'Mirror Play' and brand new song 'Dead End Thrills', sees frequent collaborator and former Duologue front-man Tim Digby-Bell join Peter Kriek and Ariana Olierook as a fully fledged member of the project. Ahead the album release, we're very excited to welcome the guys on board for what it the sixty ninth edition of our central mix and interview series. John Monkman on the Do LaB Stage Weekend Two 2018

For his debut at this year’s edition of Burning Man held in the Nevada Desert, Eelke Kleijn collaborated with Studio Drift by composing the intro music called ‘1,000 Lights’ for their performative art drone show called ‘Franchise Freedom’. The spectacle sees a swarm of 600 drones turn into autonomous flying sculptures that brings technology, science and art together in a way never seen before.
 
‘Franchise Freedom’ is based on various phenomena in nature that expose the tension between individual freedom and safety in numbers. After the intro, the drones take off, guided by Joep Beving’s ‘Ab Ovo’ on piano, to eventually descend again and herald in the beginning of Eelke’s mesmerizing set at the Mayan Warrior art car.
 
The performance by Studio Drift at Black Rock Desert, was a tribute to visionary Larry Harvey, founder of Burning Man, who challenged people to look at the world in a different way. Eelke Kleijn’s composition of ‘1,000 Lights’, will also be part of his upcoming artist album ‘Moments Of Clarity’ that is set to be released on the 22nd of November 2018.

Unsere Nr. 161 kommt heute von einem Künstler, der mich seit 2 Jahren mehr oder weniger ununterbrochen musikalisch begleitet. Seine Jahresmixe sind immer ein besonderes Highlight bei uns zu Hause. Dezent, federleicht und wahrhaftig tiefenentspannt kommen seine geschichtsartigen Mixe daher. Ein wahrhaftiger Genuss. Selten habe ich solch einen DJ gehört, der sich nach all den Jahren des Mixens immer noch die Zeit und Muse nimmt, seine Sets von Anfang bis zum Ende mit solch einer Perfektion durchzuplanen, dass jedes Mal aufs Neue ein faszinierendes Gesamtkunstwerk entsteht. 

Die Rede ist von dem Ägypter „Hisham Zahran“, einem komplett unkomplizierten und zuverlässigen Künstler. Als Mitglied von den bekannten Labels Anjunadeep und Nacelle treibt er mittlerweile weltweit sein Unwesen. Egal ob New York, Paris, Berlin oder Dubai…überall hinterlässt er seine unnachahmliche, musikalische Duftmarke.

Das von Ihm eingespielte Set ist eine herrlich ‚afterhoureske‘ Reise ins Dickicht der dezent melodischen und zugleich verträumten elektronischen Musik. Das sich Hisham für dieses Set etwas ganz besonderes einfallen lassen hat ist unüberhörbar. Waren seine Jahresmixe eher melodischer Natur, hat er sich unserem Projekt zum Anlass für eine extrem tiefenentspannte und hypnotische Richtung entschieden. Stimmungsförderlich und alleinstellungsmerkmal des Sets, sind die unnachahmigen, langgezogenen Übergänge, die sich wie ein roter Faden durch die Aufnahme ziehen. Sie fördern an dieser Stelle nicht nur das Verschmelzen der Songs, sondern sorgen auch für die damit einhergehende, stets gleichbleibend hoch gehaltene, entspannte Stimmung durch das ganze Set hinweg. Grandios. Und ein Beleg dafür, dass Tempo nicht für alles verantwortlich ist.

Ich war beim ersten Hören des Sets tatsächlich komplett geflasht, hatte ich doch etwas leicht anderes erwartet. Aber diese Überraschungsmomente, die unsere Reihe und die jeweiligen musikalischen Interpretationen immer wieder mit sich bringen, hauen mich, nein uns, immer wieder um. Darauf darf man auch ein wenig Stolz sein. Vor allem dann, wenn die Künstler mit soviel Liebe zum Detail an die Sache rangehen und etwas vollkommen einzigartiges erschaffen. Nämlich ihrem bzw. seinem Afterhour Sound. Dass das heute leider keine Selbstverständlichkeit mehr ist, muss an dieser Stelle nicht gesagt werden.
Umso mehr freut es mich / uns, dass wir Hisham mit einem Set gewinnen konnten. 

Schnallt euch an… Ich kann mich nur wiederholen, aber es erwartet euch eine Reise durch verspielte und hypnothische Felder, die wie gemacht für eine Afterhour sind. Das gabs bei uns schon lange nicht mehr….seid gespannt.

Hisham Zahran presents Afterhour Sounds Podcast Nr. 161

Amidst the height of the darkest season, Rodriguez Jr. illuminated The Immortal Kingdom at The 2019 Cityfox Halloween festival with a signature Live house set, taking us on an undulating synth-laced voyage with attacking drum beats that made the crowd quake with rigor and might! What a delight.

Over the course of the one and a half hour set in The Immortal Kingdom, Olivier Mateu performed an homage to his Chicago and Detroit house music influences with bouncy house synths haunting and weaving into whimsical harmonies uplifting the crowd over clapping snares and incessant hi-hat tinkerings, while maniacal samples looped to make melodic phrases worked as a nod to the spooky season.

He worked the crowd as a natural, classically trained musician does and his performative alter ego came alive for the ride, plus he gave us insight into the track list (a rarity!) so take a peek below and comment where your favorite musical moment peaks.
