We’ve got an extra special, extra spicy Valentine’s Day treat for you today from WUMP co-founder, @Scatzofficial! He continues to blaze his own unique trail through the world of bass music, and today’s single, “Spicy Ranch”, takes us on a journey through the Wild Wild West.

“Spicy Ranch” tells the story of an interdimensional cowboy who prefers to sip from his flask of liquid LSD instead of whiskey or mead, traveling through the multiverse with his magical lasso and his enchanted whip. Scatz somehow paints this picture with sound, as we hear the “whoosh” of the lasso and the crack of the whip contribute to the percussive line throughout the song, and the swing on the beat conjures an image of this colorful cowboy stomping through the desert with a grin. As whimsical and light-hearted as the beginning of the song is with the guitar melody, groovy bassline, and Johnny Cash samples, Scatz eventually incorporates heavier sections of fat sub-bass and grit in the low end that show us this cowboy means business. These heavy sections grow each time throughout the song, creating an unpredictable and dynamic listening experience that has a little something for everyone. As we get deep into the song, a storm brews in the desert, as Scatz layers creatively designed synths and aggressive growls on top of distorted guitar that swell and swirl as a Dust Devil sweeping over the barren wasteland. The storm gives way for a brief second, and the familiar guitar melody shines through- demonstrating a masterful example of the technique of building tension and then releasing it. 

Things calm down for a bit as our cowboy friend gathers himself, represented by the lovely little breakdown before Scatz reintroduces the gritty low end and gets us moving yet again. Continuing to grow larger and larger, “Spicy Ranch” culminates to a final showdown for the trippy cowboy, as Scatz pulls out all the stops and unleashes a ruthless and gnarly section that is mind-blowing on multiple levels and drops with some serious force. This final section contains countless different mind-boggling elements, including crazy growls and out-of-the-box percussion, that show off Scatz’ vast music knowledge and production tricks that he’s picked up in his 7 years of producing bass music. 

Scatz has another big EP coming in just a few months with our good friends over at a certain Bay Area record label, so be on the lookout for that! We hope you enjoy this release, and as always, we encourage you to share with your friends.

Each of us endures suffering and pain at different times and in different forms, so our goal is to create a community of openness and fierce friendship where we can help one another out during the dark times. In this video game of life, pain is the resistance that helps us level up. Sometimes it’s perfectly okay to play in co-op mode and reach out to a friend for support. By sharing our deepest, most intimate truths through our art, we can recognize similarities between our individual human experiences and make real connections that will serve us the rest of our lives.
