Super Phunk

SUPER PHUNK

Some heavy cop show funk from us! From day one The Du-Rites have kinda been on the fringes of the funk/soul world. Partly because we come from divergent music backgrounds but also we never tried to mimic any specific era. Funk = "retro" to many but we’re all over the place, so there’s no rules for what we use to get our sound, whether it’s trash or treasure. For this, Danger Mouse let Jay borrow two keyboards (the Korg Micro-Preset and the Baldwin Discoverer) because he's been focused on drums and ain’t updated his studio in years. Pablo used a Peavey amp our live bassist Bill Harvey found on the sidewalk for trash pickup. Jay played a can of WD-40 for percussion in the second half of the song when the beat switches up. To us, it's less about gear and year/label/region authenticity than using what you got and what you’re vibing with at any given moment to make it funky.

A Funky Bad Time

The Du-Rites are a funk duo comprised of Jay Mumford and Pablo Martin. Pablo on guitar and bass guitar; Jay on drums and percussion. They split the keyboard/synthesizer duties. Individually, Pablo plays guitar with the legendary Tom Tom Club and spent years as a mastering engineer. Jay has worked as a drummer live and/or in studio for Danger Mouse, Adrian Quesada, Dan Auerbach, Binky Griptite(Daptone), Soul Supreme, Just Blaze, Lord Finesse and many others, as well as being sampled by Madlib ("Road of the Lonely Ones"), Mark Ronson and others. In addition to four studio albums, one live album, an EP and seven 7" singles under their own name, The Du-Rites have worked with a wide range of talents since their inception in 2016, including Eddie Palmieri, Robert Glasper and Ghostface Killah. They also scored a large portion of the original music for Bobbito Garcia's Rock Rubber 45s film.
