#8 Cezaire Tape - One In A Million

Basically, I'm a child of 90's hip-hop. I always have been and always will be. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of dope hip-hop on the market today (mainstream and underground), but to me, the eight-year period spanning from 1990 - 1998 was a hip-hop Renaissance that will probably never be duplicated. And DJ Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia (AKA Cool Bob Love, AKA DJ Cucumber Slice, AKA the ten thousand other nicknames this dude has) were probably two of the most influential people in the game at that time. I'm not gonna go into a long history regarding their show on WKCR, but from 1990 - 1998, during the hours of 1-5 AM every Thursday night / Friday morning, these two, for lack of a better term, "smashed the airwaves" of the New York metropolitan area. Their show was responsible for launching the careers of Nas, Mobb Deep, Big L, Jay-Z, Big Pun, Fat Joe, The Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest, The Beatnuts, Black Moon, Redman, The Wu-Tang Clan, and the list goes on and on. Since I was too young during the show's heyday, I've had to feed my addiction for this show by scouring the internets for uploaded tapes from listeners from back in the day. What I did with this mix was try to showcase some of the joints that were spun on their show beginning in 1990 and ending in 1998. I compiled all the tracks to make it seem like you're listening to an actual taping of the show. All of these tracks were played on WKCR at least once (some more than others). I even threw in some of my favorite freestyles and exclusives, which were taken directly from old cassettes. I've got a ton of these old recordings, and it was really difficult to decide what to include/exclude, but hopefully, you'll get a sense of their legendary show and the evolution of classic hip-hop over a legendary eight-year period. Also, shout out to the good peoples at <a href="http://Philaflava.org" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Philaflava.org</a> for supplying me and the rest of the Stretch &amp; Bob fiends with hundreds of old tapes. Turn that shit up....

The Dusty Handclap No. 19 (A Tribe Called Quest Tribute)

I know the phrase "Dilla Changed my Life" is something that almost seems watered down and become somewhat of a fad, but it seems to be something I am comfortable with saying.  

My story is some what similar to all of the great stories heard from all of our heroes in hip-hop. Most of their first encounters of Jay Dee's music was through the circulation of his Slum Village demo tape distributed around small circles primarily via Houseshoes & Q-Tip.  For my generation hip-hop was already around, but when you consider the actual time of understanding hip-hop, I was first introduced through a small vinyl collection from a close friend in High School, which included "Slum Village - Fantastic Vol 2".  The "Intro" track into "Conant Gardens" into "I Don't Know" was a life changing sequence for me.  Jam packed w/ Soulful rhodes, great mixing, thick drums, heavy bass lines, chopped drum breaks, rhythmic vocals, scratching, vocal chops etc. The density of the music in that 3 track sequence was unmatched (maybe until this day).  Since that time when I was maybe 14 (pre Dj years) I became obsessed w/ hip-hop music and the culture.  Over the years I studied anything Jay Dee (Dilla): his music, the moves he made, the records he sampled, the drums he chopped.   

Since his passing there have been 100's if not 1000's of tributes created to celebrate his catalog.  With the blueprint for me being the masterpiece mixes created by J Rocc in the early years following his passing, I felt like I needed to take another approach.  

This episode is more focused on connecting stories told by some of Dilla's greatest collaborators.   The music selections may not be reflective of his "greatest work" but they are chosen to help drive the story and help explain the reasons why he was so impactful to the game.  Much like his catalog and the 1000's of mixes out there are equally the same amount of stories circulating the internet of people talking about his impact.  These are some of the more important ones, or at least that helped me get a better idea of who he was and why he was a genius.  

Whether you are a new Dilla fan or a long-time Jay Dee fanatic, I hope this helps guide you to a greater understanding of the James Yancey legacy.

One of my favorite MC's of all time is Mos Def. The man was so damn fluid on the mic and actually cared about the things he talked about. A true poet. Growing up, it was very important for me to see people who were actually intelligent while still retaining that cool factor. I think many times in the black community, you equate a person being extremely well-read as either snobby and elitist or a straight sell-out with no self-awareness. Mos was able to shatter those misconceptions beautifully. The man is an award-winning actor, true mc, poet, and producer. And he does all of them with skill and a nobility. I am constantly thinking of different themes to build a mix around. With the completion of each mix I typically fall into a 2-3 week funk where I try to think of a new theme for my next mix. Following the Folger's Blends mix I was struggling to think of a new theme. Then, one day while doing a random google search I stumbled onto the above logo. At first glance, I thought the logo was straight dope. However, the logo became even cooler when I learned that it was the creation of my favorite t-shirt designer, Derek from Manifest Worldwide. Given that the saying behind the logo comes from a ATCQ song, I was originally intending to do a Tribe mix. However, since Tribe mixes are a dime a dozen I went in the direction of creating a mix that attempts to capture the jazzy vibe that groups like Tribe and Digable Planets spawned. As the title suggests, all songs on this mix incorporate jazz based samples. The track selection includes music from jazzy groups and producers such as A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, Diamond D, Black Moon, De La Soul, Madlib, No ID, Gang Starr, Showbiz & AG, Big L, The Roots, and Nas (I think that's all of them?). Half the fun of making this mix was doing the research to ensure that all songs maintained a jazz break. Some were no brainers, but other songs with jazz breaks were quite surprising. Jazz based samples have always given a special vibe to hip hop music so I hope this mix captures that magic. Thanks again to Derek at Manifest for inspiring the mix's theme.
